Graduate students working on dissertations regarding some aspect of the life and career of Harry S. Truman or of the public and foreign policy issues which were prominent during the Truman years are eligible for a fellowship of $16,000 to pursue their dissertation WRITING.  Applicants should have substantially completed their research and be prepared to devote full time to writing their dissertation.  Preference will be given to projects based on extensive research at the Truman Library, although there is no requirement that applicants conduct further research at the Truman Library.  See website for more details.

Fellowships are for research in France to determine the viability of a projected doctoral dissertation in the social sciences of humanities.  Doctoral candidates whose home institutions are members of the Council are eligible to apply if the have US citizen or permanent resident status, they have completed the majority of the coursework but have not passed their dissertation prospectus nor begun substantial dissertation research.  Six fellowships of $4,000each are expected to be awarded.  Recipients will also receive a stipend to attend the next Conference of Europeanists to present their research.  Funds may NOT be used to support language training or tuition for courses at a French university or to supplement a comparable or larger fellowship for research in France.  See website for details.

Approximately 25 residential research fellowships for independent research for periods between May 2005 to August 2006 will be awarded under the Research Program of Winterthur.  Winterthur offers a variety of fellowships with tenure ranging from one month to one year, including NEH fellowships (that offer up to $40,000 for 4-12 months duration).  Library holdings include books, manuscripts, ephemera, and trade catalogues from the 17th century through 1930 as well as recent scholarly works, auction, catalogues, and periodicals.  Museum collections contain domestic artifacts and works of art made or used in America from 1640 to 1860.  Scholars may pursue research in American fine and decorative art, history, and culture; material culture and design; or related topics in British, Continental or Asian decorative arts and designs.  Past research subjects included preindustrial crafts, consumerism, foodways, the history of everyday life, advertising, women’s lives, travel and tourism, and historical memory.  Postgraduate INTERNSHIP in the Curatorial Dept. is also offered.  Also non-stipendiary Visiting Scholar applications are welcomed.  See website for more information and application forms, etc.

The Du Bois Center offers opportunities for research on all aspects of African and African American life, history, and culture.  Applications for Visiting Fellows for the academic year 2005-6 are invited.  See details and instruction on website.  Fellows pursue their own research while interacting on a regular basis with ten to fifteen other Visiting Fellows working in the field, including at weekly colloquia.  Appointments are made for no less than one semester; limited funding is available depending on the resources of the Institute, which varies each year.  See website.

Applications are invited for research fellowships and travel grants for 2005-6 at the Lewis Walpole Library, a department of YaleUniversity located 40 miles from New Haven.  The library has significant holdings of 18th century prints, drawings, manuscripts, books and paintings.  In conjunction with other Yale collections such as those at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the YaleCenter for British Art, the Library is able to support in-depth research in most aspects of 18th century studies.  The Library is within easy reach of additional resources in Hartford, CT.   Visiting fellowships are normally for 4 weeks for post-doc’s or for doctoral candidate students at the dissertation stage.  The stipends provide a stipend of $1,800 per month in addition to free accommodation on site.  Travel grants are offered also, varying in duration and amount, and also offer free accommodation.  See website for more details and application instructions.

(1)   The Short-Term Travel Grants program provides fellowships for up to 8 weeks to US Postdoctoral scholars and holders of other professional terminal graduate degrees for independent or collaborative research in Europe.  See website for details.

(2)   An open competition for the Fulbright New Century Scholars Program has been called to select 30 outstanding research scholars and professionals from the US and abroad to participate in the program under this year’s theme, “Higher Education in the 21sdt Century: Global Challenge and National Response.”  Of the 30 to be selected, approximately 1/3 will be US citizens while the remaining 2/3 will be visiting scholars from countries with an operational Fulbright Scholar Program.  Under guidance of an appointed Distinguished Scholar Leader, NCS scholars engage in collaborative, multidisciplinary examination of a topic of universal concern and together seek solutions to critical issues affecting all humankind.  See the website for details for applications.  Awards consist of individual travel/research awards in the amount of $37,000 and accommodations and meals for program seminars.  Dr. Diedre Badejo (ext. 22300) is KentStateUniversity’s Fulbright coordinator; please contact her as well if you are interested in applying.

This entire program of fellowships enables Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, and Slovak scholars in the humanities and allied social sciences to carry out research at institutes of advanced study in other countries.  Each cycle will fund short-term residencies for up to 3 Mellon Research Fellows at each of the 17 designated institutes in Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Jordan, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, and Yemen.  The fellowships are intended to serve younger scholars who have already obtained the PhD or have equivalent experience and who wish to undertake a specific research project at one of the participating institutes.  EACH INSTITUTE WILL ISSUE ITS OWN ANNOUNCEMENT AND WILL HANDLE ALL MATTERS CONCERNING APPLICATION AND SELECTION.  See the CAORC website for details.  Participating institutions include the:

The McKenzie Foundation makes grants in the areas of education, health, human services, and cultural and environmental affairs.  In particular, funding is focused on four interests: early childhood development, education, the environment, and arts and culture.  NO DEADLINE FOR LETTERS OF INQUIRY.  If interested, the foundation will invite a full proposal and set a deadline.  Organizations must have 501(c) 3 status (non-profits).  The Foundation will not support endowments, capital construction, general fundraising or deficit financing.  The foundation supports creative projects that aim to “serve as catalytic agents in their fields and that can have an impact that will continue after the specific project has been completed.”  The foundation seeks programs that are encouraging excellence and personal development; the foundation believes in using arts and culture to improve the quality of life for people of all ages and backgrounds.  See website for details.

These programs support those not over 40 years of age who have a doctorate or comparable academic degree in their field (academics just completing their doctoral degree may apply, but must submit the text of their thesis/dissertation with the application materials).  Proof of independent research work must be supplied.  Applicants must have adequate language abilities (scholars in the humanities sound German language abilities if a sound command of German is required for the feasibility of the project; while scholars in natural, medical and engineering sciences must possess and provide proof of at least a good command of English).  Monthly stipends range between EUR 2100 and EUR 3000 with the selection committee determining the precise amount of the stipend.  Other expenses may also be covered in some instances such as travel, family grants, subsidy toward health insurance, additional grants for German language courses prior to the actual period of research, and the possibility of support for limited stays in other European countries other than the home country for research essential to the project.  SEE WEBSITE FOR DETAILS.
