Carol Toncar Receives Distinguished Woman Award

Sponsored Programs’ Carol Toncar was recently honored as a recipient of the university’s Tenth Annual Distinguished Woman Award. Toncar, Director Emerita of Sponsored Programs, has been with the university since 1961.

The award, which is sponsored by the Professional Women of Kent State University, recognizes women who have made significant contributions to the university community and have become significant role models through their achievements. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by a committee comprised of members of the Professional Women organization.

Although she retired in December 2005, Toncar, who became Director of Sponsored Programs shortly after she joined the office in 1977, still advises the staff part-time. Her nominators and co-workers attribute the office’s ability to successfully assist Kent State University faculty and staff in using their grants resources wisely to Toncar’s expertise and extensive knowledge of onerous federal regulations, as well as her familiarity with all aspects of the university.

“Carol has inculcated Sponsored Programs staff with the service-oriented characteristics for which the division is known and appreciated,” cited one of her nominators. “Her command of Sponsored Programs Administrative issues served not only Kent State University, but also other universities in the region that sought her advice.”

Throughout her career, Toncar has made many significant contributions to the university. Early on she earned the designation of Certified Research Administrator (CRA), a title which is given to individuals who have met certain eligibility requirements and, through testing, have demonstrated a broad range of knowledge pertaining to the research administration field. And, in addition to her position with Sponsored Programs, Toncar has also served on the University Research Council and the Institutional Review Board, and has played an important role in implementing federal and university policies relating to research and grant-funding.

Please join us in recognizing Carol Toncar, 2007 Distinguished Woman Award recipient, for all of her many achievements.
