On May 1, 2007, Kent State held its first-ever Clean Energy Forum to optimize preparedness to take advantage of upcoming federal and state clean energy funding opportunities. Facilitated by Gregory Wilson, forum attendees comprised of Kent State faculty and staff representing research, legal, outreach, sponsored programs, regional campuses and commercialization units, shared energy-related expertise and interests across the Kent State system and learned of the initiatives of other Ohio universities. Guest speaker Carol McGuire of Lewis-Burke Associates, LLC and former Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, discussed federal funding opportunities and the current trends of clean energy research and development.
The forum’s goals were to enable faculty and staff with interest in clean energy to become better acquainted and to be informed of potential funding opportunities so they are better prepared to secure funding when it becomes available. Specific program solicitations will be shared with the group as they become available.
Jointly sponsored by the divisions of Research and Graduate Studies and Regional Development, the forum served as a launching point for the university’s recent role in the formation of the University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio (UCEAO) with 14 other Ohio universities involved in clean energy research. The UCEAO held its inaugural meeting in Columbus on April 23, 2007, during which representatives from the participating universities signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” to work together on clean energy research and development.
