Ohio Board of Regents: Nine Expectations for Two-Year Colleges and Regional Campuses

Several years ago, the Ohio Board of Regents began an initiative that would have markedly changed regional campuses, perhaps even closing them in favor of community colleges. Kent State was instrumental in changing the minds of both the Regents and legislators by agreeing that its regional campuses would meet the mission proposed for the community colleges. The Nine Standards document lists the criteria that the Regents desired. Our campuses have been committed to providing educational experiences and activities that are in line with those standards, and in fact, we have been measured against them in terms of receiving funding. Although our mission as an integral part of Kent State University assures that we will accomplish more than what the standards require, we remain committed to them as basic to our place in higher education in Ohio.

EXPECTATION ONE:

A range of career/technical programming preparing individuals for employment in a specific career at the technical or paraprofessional level.

EXPECTATION TWO:

Commitment to an effective array of developmental education services providing opportunities for academic skill enhancement.

EXPECTATION THREE:

Partnerships with industry, business, government and labor for the education and training of the work force to enhance the economic development of the community.

EXPECTATION FOUR:

Non-credit continuing education and services.

EXPECTATION FIVE:

Programs and services that assist student=s advancement toward a baccalaureate degree.

EXPECTATION SIX:

Linkages with high schools to ensure that high school graduates are adequately prepared for higher education. These linkages should include a student oriented focus and marketing strategies to ensure that high school students are aware of their educational opportunities within the community/service area.

EXPECTATION SEVEN:

The learning environment provided to students is accessible and the college uses delivery strategies in teaching which are of the highest quality.

EXPECTATION EIGHT:

That student fees charged by an institution are as low as possible, especially if the institution is being supported by a local levy.

Community involvement in the decision-making process in such critical areas as course delivery, range of services, fees and budgets and administrative personnel.
