Keynote Panel: "Discovering Ardi

Named the "2009 Science Breakthrough of the Year" by Science, the discovery of the oldest fossilized hominid skeleton, Ardipithecus ramidus (nicknamed "Ardi"), will be the topic of a panel discussion led by four of the local scientists (one KSU professor and three KSU alumni) who worked on the project that was featured in the October 2, 2009 issue of Science.  

• Dr. Bruce Latimer, Case Western Reserve University Professor of Anthropology, Anatomy, and Cognitive Science and former director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History
• Dr. C. Owen Lovejoy, University Professor, Department of Anthropology, Kent State University
  
• Dr. Scott Simpson, Professor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and research associate at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History
• Dr. Linda Spurlock, biological anthropologist and director of Human Health at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History  

The panel will discuss the collaboration of 47 researchers who revealed possible insights into our human origins.  Professor Richard Meindl, chair of the KSU Anthropology Department, will moderate this panel.

Pre-Conference Workshop on Aging

This half-day pre-conference workshop for health care professionals working with older adults will precede the 34th annual Ohio Professional and Student Conference on Aging.

The workshop, "Combining guided reminiscence and meditative practice in groups with older adults: A recipe for enhancing mood and memories" will be led by Paula Harman-Stein, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and founder of the Center for Healthy Aging in Kent, Ohio.  Clinical practice and recent research findings indicate that both mood and recall of personal memories can be enhanced by combining expressive writing techniques with a brief meditative practice taught in group settings with older adults.  This therapeutic approach can be easily incorporated into regular use by a wide variety of mental health professionals either separately or as an adjunct to other forms of treatments. 

Please note:  There is a $30 registration fee to attend this event.  The number of registrants is limited.  Deadline for acceptance of registration is March 18, 2010.  Cancellations after this date will not be refunded.

Pilliod Lecture Series: "Collaboration"

David T. Abbott
Executive Director of The George Gund Foundation

David T. Abbott is executive director of The George Gund Foundation, a grantmaking organization focused primarily on Cleveland and making it, and urban areas in general, more globally competitive, livable, sustainable and just.  He also serves as chair of The Fund for Our Economic Future, an innovative collaboration of grantmakers working to catalyze economic transformation of Northeast Ohio.  Prior to joining the foundation, he served as president of University Circle Incorporated, executive director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and executive director of the Cleveland Bicentennial Commission.  Abbott was also the Cuyahoga County administrator and, early in his career, a reporter for The Plain Dealer.  He holds a B.A. in political science from Denison University, a M.S. in journalism from Columbia University, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. 

A reception will follow the presentation at 6:30 p.m. in Kent Student Center, Room 204.

Enjoy a performance of song and dance by a select group of senior musical theatre majors who will take their routine to the Big Apple and perform for agents at the York Theatre in April.  Each Spring, the New York City showcase allows a select group of senior musical theatre majors from Kent State University, and other universities, to audition for opportunities in the New York market.The showcase is an introduction of  agency representatives to our musical theatre students.  In past years, many students have signed with agents as a result of the showcase.
