- Posted Feb. 23, 2011 - Researchers Discover New Phenomenon Involving Liquid Crystals A team of researchers at Kent State University have discovered a new version of a widely used scientific technique. The technique is electrophoresis — in which an applied electric field is used to move particles dispersed in a fluid — and the new idea is to use a liquid crystal as the carrier fluid. The result is increased versatility, which may lead to new uses in display technologies, microfluidic devices and other applications.
Oleg Lavrentovich, director of Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute, collaborated with Kent State graduate student Israel Lazo and Oleg Pishnyak, a former Kent State graduate student who is now a senior scientist at Kent Displays, Inc. Their findings are published in the Oct. 21 edition of Nature, an international weekly journal of science.
