JobsOhio’s Mark Kvamme Visits Kent State University’s Centennial Research Park Kent State University received Mark Kvamme, the newly installed interim chief investment officer and president of JobsOhio, on Tuesday, July 26. JobsOhio is the private economic development agency established by Gov. John Kasich and the Ohio legislature. Kvamme visited the university’s Centennial Research Park and three Portage County manufacturing firms that are all licensees of technology developed through research at Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute®.

Kent State Names New Vice President for Research Kent State University has named Dr. W. Grant McGimpsey as its new vice president for research. McGimpsey comes to Kent State from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Mass., where he serves as director of the WPI Bioengineering Institute, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and professor of biomedical engineering.

President Obama praises Kent Displays, Inc. in Northeast Ohio stop President Barack Obama hosted the “Winning the Future” forum in Cleveland yesterday to meet with the Northeast Ohio business community, including Albert Green, CEO of Kent Displays, Inc., a local spin-off company of the Liquid Crystal Institute that employs about 100 people.

Researchers Discover New Phenomenon Involving Liquid Crystals A team of researchers at Kent State University have discovered a new version of a widely used scientific technique. The technique is electrophoresis — in which an applied electric field is used to move particles dispersed in a fluid — and the new idea is to use a liquid crystal as the carrier fluid. The result is increased versatility, which may lead to new uses in display technologies, microfluidic devices and other applications.

Oleg Lavrentovich, director of Kent State’s Liquid Crystal Institute, collaborated with Kent State graduate student Israel Lazo and Oleg Pishnyak, a former Kent State graduate student who is now a senior scientist at Kent Displays, Inc. Their findings are published in the Oct. 21 edition of Nature, an international weekly journal of science.

Kent State Receives Grant for Study of Carbon Consumption by Microorganisms Three Kent State University professors recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a molecular analysis of carbon consumption. The three-year grant, awarded by the DOE's Office of Biological and Environmental Research, will provide funding of $1,075,638 for the project.
