Liquid Crystal Device and Methods Thereof

KSU-334

Abstract: It is clear sensitivity of the LC sensor strongly relies on the interaction between the LC and the surface features. When this interaction between LC and unsensed surface (i.e. surface before exposed to target species) is very strong, it would be difficult or need high level of target molecules to trigger the orientation change. This invention presented a double layer alignment film design that can fine tune this interaction just above the threshold requirement for the orientation change. Therefore, smaller amounts of target molecules can be detected. For example, LC sensor with single layer alignment film shows no response to lecithin of more than 4% weight ratio in LC. While the double layer device cut down the detection limit to only 0.1% .
