Methods and Apparatus to Produce Aligned Film of Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystals

KSU.340

Abstract: It was discovered that one may use a special pad to shear lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals dissolved in solvent to a thin layer on the surface of substrate.  After the solvent is dried out, the thin film consists of an aligned structure of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal.  The described invention does not require application of any additional dopant to produce a highly aligned film of the LCLC.  The dried films of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals may be used as optical polarizers; as compensating films in ultra-violet, visible, and infrared ranges of radiation; or as alignment layers for thermotropic liquid crystals.

Applications:

  •          Optical dichroic polarizers
  •          Compensating films
  •          Alignment layers in liquid crystal displays

Advantages:

  •          No application of additional dopant is needed to produce highly-aligned film of the LCLC's
  •          Without dopants, better prediction of chemical and physical properties without additional tests
  •          Increased polarization efficiency of dried films, by about 10%
