Liquid Crystal Composition,Device and Method Thereof

KSU.342

Abstract: We have developed polymer stabilized isotropic (PSI) liquid crystals which can be used for displays and phase modulators.  When the PSI is used in display, the material is in an optical isotropic state at 0 V (dark state).  There is no residual birefringence effect at oblique viewing directions.  When a voltage is applied horizontally, the electric field generates an optical anisotropy to change the incident light polarization (bright state).  PSI liquid crystal displays have the advantages of large viewing angles, fast response times, and easy manufacturing process.  When the PSI is used in phase modulator, voltages are applied in the vertical direction to change the refractive index for light propagating along the applied electric field.  The PSI phase modulators have the advantage of polarization-insensitivity.  Therefore this invention should be of benefit to virtually all display companies.

Applications: Liquid crystal displays and liquid crystal phase modulators

Advantages: These PSI phase modulators have the advantage of polarization-insensitivity.  Therefore this invention should be of benefit to virtually all display companies.  Other advantages include wide viewing angle, fast response time, and ease in manufacture
