A Liquid Crystal Composition Containing Chiral Dopant, Device Thereof, and Methods Thereof

 KSU.367

Abstract: The invention provides a novel optically tunable and electrically switchable cholesteric material, a device using the material and methods thereof.  The material can reversibly phototune the reflection color into primary red, green and blue colors, which can be used as electronic papers, dynamic reflectors, tunable filters, color filters, tunable color filters, information storage, photodisplays, and color displays, etc.

Applications:

  •       Optically tunable and electrically switchable cholesteric materials
  •       Tunable color filters
  •       Dynamic filters
  •       Photonics
  •       Information storage
  •       Electronic papers
  •       Chiral nematic photodisplays
  •       Color displays

Advantages:

First report on reversible phototuning reflection color truly across entire visible region by employing our synthesized light-driven chiral molecule as the only dopant in an achiral liquid crystal media

High helical twisting power and superior solubility in liquid crystal host – very important for practical applications
