The School of Library and Information Science offers the M.L.I.S. program to residents of central and southern Ohio at its site in the State Library of Ohio. SLIS typically has about 200 students enrolled at the Columbus location at any given time. In the past 10 years, more than 600 students have pursued the M.L.I.S. degree at this site. The newly renovated 6,100 square foot space at the State Library of Ohio’s campus is located in the historic Jeffrey Mining Manufacturing Co. complex in Columbus' Italian Village. Facilities include state-of-the-art classrooms, conference and meeting areas, faculty and staff offices, and a computer laboratory.
The facility offers free parking, a centralized location and access to the State Library’s vast collection of resource materials. Three full-time resident faculty members, support and administrative staff and more than 25 part-time adjunct instructors from all areas of professional librarianship serve the students here.
Kent State has offered the M.L.I.S. degree program in Columbus since 1975. When SLIS moved to the State Library of Ohio in 2008, it became the first library science school to be housed within a state library since Melvil Dewey's School of Library Economy at the State Library of New York opened in 1889.
Additional information for SLIS Columbus students can be found in the Columbus Fact Sheet.
