SLIS to Honor Alum & Friends of the Year, plus Student Scholars & Recent Graduates
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University will honor 10 of its top alumni and dozens of outstanding students at events in Kent and Columbus this spring. The Celebration of Alumni and Student Success will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at the SLIS site in the State Library of Ohio in Columbus, and on Wednesday, May 1, at the Kent Student Center on the Kent Campus. Events in both locations start at 6 p.m. and are open to all; there is no charge to attend, but a reservation is requested.

Registration Opens for Third International Conference on Information and Religion
The Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR) at Kent State University will host its Third Annual International Conference on Information and Religion on June 19-22 in Charlotte, N.C., in conjunction with the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) 2013 Annual Conference. Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference Features Authors Angela Johnson, Gary Schmidt and Yuyi Morales
Kent State University’s 29th Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth will be held on the evening of Thursday, April 4, 2013, and all day on Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Kent Student Center. The conference provides a forum for discussion of multicultural themes and issues in literature for children and young adults.

College to Host First Research Colloquium
The first College of Communication and Information (CCI) Research Colloquium will take place on March 8. Brodie to Host American Library Association Youth Media Awards Jan. 28
On Monday, Jan. 28, at 8 a.m. Pacific Time (11 am Eastern time) in the Washington State Convention Center, the 2013 ALA Youth Media Awards will be announced. More than 1,300 onsite audience members and an unlimited number of virtual participants will join a webcast to hear the news first hand of who will win top honors among children’s and young adult authors and illustrators, as well as producers of children’s audio and video materials. Creative Outreach Grant for Teachers and Librarians -- Up to $1,000 to be Awarded
Applications are now being accepted for the Annual Virginia Hamilton and Arnold Adoff Creative Outreach Grants for Teachers and Librarians. Two grants up to $1,000 each will be given. One grant will be given to a teacher and another to a librarian for proposals to develop new classroom or library programs that raise awareness of multicultural literature among young people, particularly but not exclusively through the works of Virginia Hamilton. DEADLINE EXTENDED - “Museum Origins” Summer Course in Italy!
The Museum Origins course offered by the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University has extended to April 1 the deadline for applications for the eight-week, summer 2013 class, which includes two weeks in Florence, Italy, visiting museums and learning about the collectors and collections from which they evolved. Remaining seats in the three-credit course will be opened up to upper-division undergraduates in any major, as well as graduate students and anyone who has already completed a graduate degree from any institution. SLIS Student Pursues Degree While Teaching in Spain
Kent State University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) graduate student Christina Booth believes that everyone should be required to travel and live in a foreign country for at least six months before graduating high school or college. The learning experiences you gain from living abroad are priceless, she said. Booth speaks from personal experience, having visited or lived in several different countries. This year she is teaching English as a Foreign Language at a public school in Spain, while also working on her M.L.I.S.

Cristobal Urbano is a visiting scholar from Barcelona, Spain. He teaches at the University of Barcelona where his expertise is library and information science (“information and documentation” as it is called in Spain), with particular interest in information sources and services. All in the Family: Alum Follows Aunt, Grandmother to LIS
After graduating from Kent State’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), Laurence Skirvin, M.L.I.S ’11, became the third person in his family to pursue a career in library and information science.
Skirvin, originally from Villa Rica, Ga., received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of West Georgia in 2005. Both Skirvin’s grandmother and aunt were librarians; his grandmother was a Kent State SLIS alumna. Click to read more.

Kent State SLIS faculty receive federal grant for $219,000+ to improve access to digital resources
Two faculty members in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University, Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Karen Gracy, Ph.D., have received a National Leadership Grant in the amount of $219,386 from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The funds will be used to help improve access to digital resources within and beyond the library world through what is known as “Linked Open Data (LOD).”

The students include Maryanne Becka Haller of Strongsville, Ohio; Steven Kemple of Cincinnati, Ohio; Jennifer Camarati Mille of Brunswick, Ohio; Maria Trivisonno of Lyndhurst, Ohio; and Maria Vega of Sidney, Ohio. Each received a Laura Bush 21st Century “Youth Services, Librarians, and Museums—A New Vision of Learning” scholarship funded by the federal Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in Washington, D.C.

More than 80 SLIS alumni, faculty and friends gathered in the Kent Student Center on Monday, Oct. 4, for the annual Alumni and Friends Honors and Awards Dinner, where they reconnected with former colleagues and students, made new acquaintances and celebrated alumni success. Molly Raphael, president-elect of the American Library Association, delivered an inspiring keynote address titled "Libraries: Essential for Learning, Essential for Life." Kent State Hosts Virginia Hamilton Conference, April 8-9
The 26th Annual Virginia Hamilton Conference on Multicultural Literature for Youth will be held Thursday, April 8, and Friday, April 9, at Kent State University in the Kent Student Center. The conference provides a forum for discussion of multicultural themes and issues in literature for children and young adults.
