Sue Polanka

LIS Alumnus of the Year: For a graduate who has made a significant contribution to the Library and Information Science profession
Sue Polanka, M.L.S. '95

Sue Polanka, M.L.S. ’95, from Dayton, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from the University of Dayton and received a Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) degree from Kent State University. She is currently the Head of Reference and Instruction at Wright State University Libraries and is the editor of the American Library Association series “No Shelf Required.” One of her career goals is to consistently provide high quality, innovative library services to her community. In presenting the award at an April 30 reception held at the Kent State SLIS location in the State Library of Ohio (Columbus), SLIS Director Tomas L. Lipinski, Ph.D., said Polanka is “well known in professional circles as a writer, editor and blogger on reference and ebook topics. Her passion for reference and electronic resources spawned her award-winning blog on ebooks, ‘No Shelf Required,’ which evolved into a book series published by the American Library Association (ALA). She also serves as president of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, was elected to the ALA Council in 2012 and was named a Library Journal ‘Mover and Shaker’ in 2011, tagged as the ‘Ebook Guru.’”

Don W. Barlow & Michael O. Bice

Don Barlow

Don Barlow, of Westerville, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science and a Master of Library Science from the University of Kentucky. He is currently the Executive Director at the Westerville Public Library. His career goals are to continue to provide leadership and vision, to contribute to the bright future of public libraries, and to mentor young librarians for leadership positions in the profession. In announcing the Friend of the Year award at an April 30 reception held at the Kent State SLIS location in the State Library of Ohio (Columbus), SLIS Director Tomas L. Lipinski, Ph.D., said Barlow possesses “visionary library leadership and has had a transformational impact on the lives of many. He is a frequent lecturer in the school’s Columbus classes, taught the management class for many years and has hosted numerous practicum students. He also spearheads a tuition reimbursement program that has enticed many of his staff to enroll in the school. We thank Don for his contributions to our school.”



Michael O. Bice

Michael O. Bice, of Saint Petersburg, Fla., holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the State University of New York at Binghamton and a Master of Heath Administration from the University of Michigan. Prior to his retirement in December 2012, Bice was professor of health informatics in the SLIS Information Architecture and Knowledge Management program. In announcing the Friend of the Year award at a May 1 reception held at Kent State, SLIS Director Tomas L. Lipinski, Ph.D., said Bice was “responsible for the creation of the health informatics concentration in our Information Architecture and Knowledge Management program. A former hospital executive, he joined SLIS in 2010 to develop the curriculum, establish an advisory board of health care IT professionals, recruit adjunct instructors and establish partnerships with other institutions that have helped make the concentration a success.”





Elizabeth MiyajimaAugust Alpers Award: For graduates who contributed the most to the school as a student, while maintaining a good grade point average
Elizabeth Miyajima, M.L.I.S. '12

Elizabeth Miyajima from Hudson, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) from Kent State University, which she received in 2012. She is currently a volunteer at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Library. Her career goals are to find a position that combines her interests in cataloging, metadata, and special libraries and to continue to develop the skills she obtained during her time at Kent State University. She also was inducted into the Kent State chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the international honor society for library and information professionals.


 Elizabeth SchlueterBeta Phi Mu Student Achievement Award: For graduates who, as students, had the emblematic qualities of Beta Phi Mu: scholarship, leadership, and service
Elizabeth Schlueter
, M.L.I.S. '12

Elizabeth K. Schlueter, of Columbus, Ohio (originally from St. Louis, Mo.), attended classes at the Kent State SLIS location in the State Library of Ohio in Columbus. In presenting the award at an April 30 reception there, SLIS Director Tomas L. Lapinski, Ph.D., said she was “an outstanding student with a 4.0 GPA and a strong commitment to the program, to leadership, to service, and to scholarship. As a Columbus graduate assistant, she was instrumental in keeping the student organization active, as well as helping with various events. With regard to scholarship, she co-authored an article with one of the SLIS faculty members, for which she designed the instrument, managed the data collection, and wrote portions of the literature review.” Schlueter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from Webster University and graduated from Kent State University in 2012 with her Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree. She is currently a Product Support Specialist for OCLC, and her career goals include improving access to information by creating quality discovery tools. Schlueter also was inducted into the Kent State chapter of Beta Phi Mu this year.

Kay HoltonDan Maclachlan Award for School Library Media Specialists: For graduates who have exhibited creativity, leadership and dedication to the K-12 audience
Kay Holton, M.L.I.S. '12

Kay A. Holton, from Utica, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and a Master of Science in Agricultural Education from The Ohio State University. She graduated from Kent State University with her Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree in 2012. She is currently a science teacher at Career and Technology Education Centers (C-TEC) of Licking County in Newark, Ohio, and her career goal is to become a school library media specialist. Holton also was inducted into the Kent State chapter of Beta Phi Mu this year.

 

 

Jamie RileyDan Maclachlan Award for School Library Media Specialists: For graduates who have exhibited creativity, leadership and dedication to the K-12 audience
Jamie Riley, M.L.I.S. '12

Jamie Riley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master of Education from The Ohio State University. She graduated from Kent State University with a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) in 2012. She is currently a media specialist at Eli Pinney Elementary in Dublin, Ohio, and her career goal is to continue to support students as learners in the 21st century by teaching them the skills needed to read widely and fluently, to effectively and efficiently find and use information, and to communicate using a variety of media.  



Jason BumbicoH. F. Group Preservation Award: For graduates who, as students, demonstrated outstanding scholarship and an interest in the area of library preservation
Jason Bumbic, M.L.I.S. '12

Jason Bumbico, from Columbus, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The Ohio State University; he graduated with his Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree from Kent State in 2012. He is currently a graphic designer for the Dispatch Media Group, and his career goal is to find employment in the archival or records management field.



morgan hidyJanice Smuda Children's Librarianship Award: For graduates who, as students, demonstrated creativity, leadership, and dedication to children's librarianship through outstanding academic achievement
Morgan Hidy, M.L.I.S. '12

Morgan Hidy, from Columbus, Ohio, attended classes at the Kent State SLIS location in the State Library of Ohio in Columbus. In presenting the award at an April 30 reception there, SLIS Director Tomas L. Lipinski, Ph.D., said Hidy “consistently demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to children's services while attending the M.L.I.S. program full-time. Her passion for children's librarianship drove her to seek out hands-on experiences in children's services – in particular at the Worthington Libraries and in her practicum with Janet Ingraham Dwyer, the youth services consultant at the State Library of Ohio.” Hidy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Ohio University and graduated from Kent State University with a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) in 2012. She is currently a youth services librarian at Worthington Libraries, and her career goals include learning and growing as a youth services librarian and serving on an ALA committee.

 

Edwin MorrisThomas J. Froehlich Award: For academic excellence and promise for leadership in the field of information architecture and knowledge management
Edwin K. Morris, M.S. '12

Edwin K. Morris, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., received a Master of Science in IAKM, with a concentration in knowledge management (KM), in 2012. Denise Bedford, Ph.D., who leads the KM concentration there, had this to say about Morris: “In the Kent State Knowledge Management program we have many stars. Among them, one stands out not only in terms of the quality of his work and his creativity, but in his dedication to our program, to his fellow students, and to the profession. Edwin doesn't just talk about knowledge management, he practices it. He creates his own opportunities, and he creates opportunities for others. It has been a pleasure to work with him as a student and now as a professional colleague.” Thomas J. Froehlich, Ph.D.,  presented Morris with the award at the May 1 reception at Kent State. In addition to the M.S. in IAKM, Morris holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech communication from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Graduate Certificate in General Administration from Central Michigan University. He founded the nonprofit Pioneer Knowledge Services that offers knowledge management to nonprofits. He said his career goal is “to become the Johnny Appleseed of the knowledge ecosystem.”

Rebecca Woodruff,
of Pickerington, Ohio, is a graduate of Otterbein University with degrees in English and theatre. She is a page at Upper Arlington’s Lane Road Library; her career goal is to help mold young minds and encourage the love of reading as a youth services librarian. She is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Kent State.


Don P JasonAlumni & Friends Council Minority Scholarship: Awarded to a student based on capacity to achieve academic and professional goals and potential for leadership on campus or in the community

Don Jason III, of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in journalism. In May 2013 he graduated from Kent State with two degrees, a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) and a Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management with a concentration in Health informatics. His goals are to work as a health sciences librarian and to be a college professor teaching health sciences librarianship to the next generation of scholars.

Laura Guldeman, of Copley Ohio, is graduate of The University of Akron with a degree in English literature. She is currently a circulation clerk at Medina County District Library. Her career goal is to be a special collections or archives librarian. She is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Kent State.

 

 Robyn KrohnH.W. Wilson Scholarship: Awarded based on prior academic performance and accomplishments

Robyn Krohn,
from Salt Lake City, Utah, is a graduate of Utah State University with a degree in geology. Her career goal is either to become a medical or academic librarian. She is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Kent State.


 



sean petiyaH.W. Wilson Scholarship: Awarded based on prior academic performance and accomplishments

Sean Petiya, from Youngstown, Ohio, is a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in graphic design. He is currently a web developer, and his career goals are to work in database design and administration. He is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science at Kent State.


Health Informatics Leadership Scholarship: For students who have demonstrated outstanding health informatics leadership potential. Altagracia M. Chavez, M.D., from Cleveland, Ohio, is a graduate of the City College of New York with an M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in IAKM at Kent State. She is employed by Cleveland Clinic as a cardiac surgeon and is the medical director of the cardio-thoracic surgery program at EMH Healthcare. Her career goal is to combine her clinical experience and interest health informatics so that she can better participate in helping to shape the changes that lie ahead in health care.  

Janet Moore Health Informatics Leadership Scholarship: For students who have demonstrated outstanding health informatics leadership potential

Janet Marie Moore,
from Youngstown, Ohio, is a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in medical technology. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management degree at Kent State while working as a health science librarian and quality improvement analyst at Salem Community Hospital. Her career goal is to combine a clinical background with health informatics to enhance patient safety and improve patient outcomes.


Lisa KrokJ. Allen Oakum Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students interested in school librarianship and is based on prior academic performance, accomplishments, and demonstrated leadership

Lisa Krok,
from South Euclid, Ohio, is a graduate of Kent State University with a degree in early childhood education and Notre Dame College with a Master of Education. She is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State. Her career goals are to become a school media library specialist and to foster the love of reading in children in the library setting.  


Hannah OlmsteadJ. Allen Oakum Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students interested in school librarianship and is based on prior academic performance, accomplishments, and demonstrated leadership

Hannah Olmstead,
from Cedarville, Ohio, is a graduate of Cedarville University with a degree in early childhood education. She is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State while employed as a preschool administrator, lead teacher and circulation clerk sub at a community library. Her career goals are to become a K-12 Media Specialist and foster a community of readers by implementing children’s programs.

Laurie Katusin SwallenJ. Allen Oakum Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students interested in school librarianship and is based on prior academic performance, accomplishments, and demonstrated leadership

Laurie Katusin Swallen,
from Canton, Ohio, graduated from Kent State University with a degree in English and from The University of Akron with a master’s in English Literature and education. She is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State while employed as a library/media specialist at Tuslaw High School in Massillon. She would someday like to work with rare books in museums.

James Cook Scholarship: Awarded annually to a student who possesses a strong desire to specialize in teen librarianship, strong interest in young adult literature, a passion for telling others about what he or she has read, and an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above. Jennifer Poon, from Cincinnati, Ohio, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in social work, is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State. Her career plans are to become a public librarian. Laura Hanby also received this scholarship.

Jesse H. Shera Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students who maintain an excellent academic record and demonstrate potential for future scholarly research and publication. Alison Dickerhoof, from Ravenna, Ohio, received a degree in psychology from Kent State University and is currently pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree. She is a graduate assistant in the school and also works as a reference assistant at Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna. Her career goal is to be an adult reference librarian.

Laura KingJesse H. Shera Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to students who maintain an excellent academic record and demonstrate potential for future scholarly research and publication

Laura King,
of Brunswick, Ohio, is a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in history. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM) with a concentration in user experience design at Kent State, while working at Kent State University Libraries.


Marian Porter Huffman Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to a student who has demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, to give them the motivation to achieve these goals, and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress. Victoria Cudnik, of Lakewood, Ohio, is a graduate of Cleveland State University with a degree in communications and currently a cashier at Heinen’s; her career goal is to work in adult reference or the circulation desk in a public library.

Ashley MensahMary T. Kim Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to a student who is studying to become a library manager and/or researcher in the library and information science field

Ashley Rene Mensah,
from Hattiesburgh, Miss., a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in journalism, is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State. She lives in the Columbus area and is a library assistant in youth services at the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Ohio.

April Davis,
of Bexley, Ohio, holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan, a Master of Arts in literature from Eastern Michigan University, and a J.D. from The Ohio State University. She is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree at Kent State while working as director of student services at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Her career goal is to become an academic law librarian.


Mallory SajewskiRose Vormelker Scholarship: Awarded to a student in the school who, in the judgment of the faculty, shows the most promise in the field of special librarianship

Mallory Sajewski, of Macedonia, Ohio, is a graduate of Kent State University with a degree in oboe performance and is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree. She is currently a graduate assistant in the Honors College and graduate student assistant in the Performing Arts Library at Kent State. Her career goal is to become a performing ensemble librarian.
 

 

Sydney TaylorRowfant Club Annual Scholarship: Awarded to a student who is studying the bibliographic arts, embraces the love of books and the preservation of the written word and has a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA.

Sydney Taylor, of Carrollton, Ohio, a graduate of Kent State University with a degree in art history, is pursuing a Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree. She is currently a library associate at Stark County District Library. Her career plans are to pursue a career in digital archives and to work in special collections in an academic library or museum.
