Dual & Multiple Degree Options


Students in the School of Library and Information Science may pursue a second master's degree while working toward the M.L.I.S. Approved options include the M.L.I.S. / M.Ed., the M.L.I.S. / M.S. in IAKM and the M.L.I.S. / M.B.A.


M.L.I.S. / M.Ed.

This 57 credit-hour course of study leads to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree and multi-age licensure in school library media.This program, offered in cooperation with the College of Education, Health and Human Services, prepares students to work in all types of libraries, including school libraries, and confers initial teaching license. Students must apply and be accepted by both the School of Library and Information Science and the College and Graduate School of Education, Health and Human Services. In other words, students must submit two graduate school applications, one for each program. Each program makes an independent admission decision. Advising of students in the dual degree program will be handled by SLIS.

M.L.I.S. / M.B.A

The Master of Library and Information Science and Master of Business Administration (M.L.I.S.- M.B.A.) multiple degree program is designed for managers of large libraries and information centers.

The M.L.I.S. degree is the recognized degree for professional librarians. The M.B.A. degree is recognized as the graduate degree of choice for many seeking professional management roles in both the profit and nonprofit sector.

Students interested in this dual degree option must apply and be accepted by both the School of Library and Information Science and the Graduate School of Management. In other words, students must submit two graduate school applications, one for each program. Each program makes an independent admission decision.

Admission decisions are based on a combination of factors. Some of these are listed below:

  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or another master's degree with a graduate GPA of 3.0;
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Proficiency in algebra and calculus (or the ability to pass pre-M.B.A. workshops to be brought to proficiency);
  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Computer skills;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE); or
  • Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

The dual degree requires completion of 69 to 70 credit hours as follows: 33 to 34 credit hours in business (normally 60 hours for the M.B.A.), 25 hours in library and information science (normally 36 hours for the M.L.I.S.), plus 12 credit hours in which either M.L.I.S. or M.B.A. courses can be taken. Students taking two courses per semester (an average of six credit hours), including summers, can complete the requirements for the M.L.I.S./M.B.A. degree in as few as four years.
