Kent State's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) offers an online Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree option, called "eDegree." Kent State has the only American Library Association accredited M.L.I.S. degree program in Ohio, preparing students for positions of leadership in librarianship and the information professions.
The eDegree option is designed to provide a well-balanced schedule of classes leading to an M.L.I.S. degree for students who prefer the flexibility of online courses and the convenience of not physically attending classes in Kent or Columbus. Students are now able to complete their courses wherever and whenever they have access to the Internet.
Graduates with the M.L.I.S. degree hold various kinds of positions in libraries, information agencies, museums, cultural organizations and companies of all sorts and sizes. Many accept positions in other areas of the information field besides libraries — in research, publishing, information management, competitive business intelligence and more.
Beginning with the 2013 catalog, the M.L.I.S. degree is 37 graduate semester hours (39 graduate semester hours if pursuing the MLIS + K-12 School Library Media Licensure). For catalog years 2012 and earlier, the M.L.I.S. degree is 36 graduate semester hours. All M.L.I.S. students can begin the program in fall, spring or summer semester. Applicants should indicate in their application (Biographical Sketch form) that their attendance site will be "online.
Students choosing the eDegree option have the following advantages:
-
They can complete all coursework online in one to six years.
-
They don't have to travel to a physical location to take courses.
Tuition rates can be found on the Bursar's website at
www.kent.edu/bursar, Tuition/Fees; under Kent Campus, click on the correct academic year (AY) for Graduate Instructional & General Fees. There is an additional Distance Learning Fee for all students enrolled in an online course and/or workshop or online program.
