The program encompass the entire freshman year and delivered in three phases, Summer Institute and programming during the fall and spring semesters to ensure successful student development and collegiate matriculation.
The program begins with an intense five-week Summer Institute designed to prepare students for their academic careers at Kent State during a time where the pace is less hectic. Students are enrolled in two college courses designed to meet the Kent Core (General Education Requirements). These courses include:
In addition to taking classes, students are housed on campus with peer leaders who are responsible for enhancing the academic, personal, cultural, physical and social development of each participant. Participants are also involved in study tables throughout the week and volunteer in Kent and surrounding communities.
Ongoing Support
Academic STARS support continues throughout the freshman year at Kent State. Services available include academic advising, counseling, and leadership development. During the fall semester, participants receive a book scholarship are required to:
Students who meet the above listed guidelines are awarded a book scholarship for the for the spring semester. During the spring semester, emphasis is placed on preparing for the end of the semester and returning the following fall semester. Participants are required to continue study tables and attend various academic related workshops.
