Sociology Doctoral Program

Admission Requirements
In addition to the regular application requirements of the university, applicants to the Ph.D. program must have the following:

» A completed master’s degree or equivalent,
OR
» At least one year of full-time course work or equivalent (18 hours) in a sociology M.A. program. The course work must include the M.A. core sequence (research methods, statistics, and theory). If the M.A. is not complete upon admission, students must complete it before the start of the second semester of the Ph.D. program.

» Submission of scores on the Graduate Record Examination
» Submission of three letters of recommendation from professors or others who can adequately evaluate the applicant's work
» One or two page statement of career interests and goals

Degree Requirements

» Ph.D. students must complete 34 classroom credit hours, which include 10 hours of required courses (see below) and 24 hours of elective courses.
» The following courses are required for the Ph.D. in sociology:   

SOC 72002  Proseminar (1 credit)
SOC 72105  Contemporary Sociological Theory (3 credits)
SOC 72218  Advanced Data Analysis  (3 credits)
SOC 72894  College Teaching (3 credits)

» Ph.D. students must also pass a doctoral comprehensive exam in one major and one minor area. We have nine exam areas: criminology, deviance, families, gender, medical, mental health, race, social class, and social psychology. In addition, students must complete 30 hours of dissertation credit hours as they complete and defend their dissertation.

Funding Opportunities

» Ph.D. Teaching Fellowship or Graduate Assistantship carries an award of $12,500 per academic year and also grants a remission of tuition.
