Application Process and Timeline for Domestic Students

Domestic students should follow these steps when applying to graduate school in the Department of Sociology at Kent State University.
Applications must be completed and submitted online along with the nonrefundable application fee. The online application includes the statement of purpose, but all other application materials (transcripts, letters of reference, GRE scores) must be mailed to:

Your application will not be considered complete and released to the Department of Sociology until the Division of Graduate Studies receives all of your application materials. An incomplete application will delay the decision process.
The Department of Sociology begins making decisions about graduate assistantships as early as possible in the spring semester for students admitted for the following academic year. Therefore, to ensure full consideration for funding, domestic students should submit their materials to the Division of Graduate Studies by December 15th to ensure that the Department of Sociology receives all the materials by mid-January.
Application Materials
A complete application includes all of the materials described in steps 1-6 below. If you are also interested in a graduate assistantship, you should also complete step 7.1. Online Kent State University graduate application

2. $30 nonrefundable application fee
You will be prompted to submit your payment during the online application.
3. Statement of purpose
All applicants are required to submit a statement of purpose describing their current academic interests, research interests, long-range career goals, and how admission to the Department of Sociology at Kent State University will help you achieve these goals. Please cut and paste your statement into the appropriate text box on the space provided in the online application.
4. Three letters of recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required. Please instruct your references to use the following letter of reference form. They may also supplement this form with a written statement on their official letterhead. Your references should send a signed, hard copy of the completed reference form to the Division of Graduate Studies at the address listed above; the letter should not be submitted by the student applicant.
5. Official academic transcripts
Kent State University requires official transcripts from any academic program in which an applicant is enrolled for 8 or more credit hours. All official transcripts should be mailed to the Division of Graduate Studies at the address listed above.
6. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores
The GRE is required of all applicants. The GRE exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Information about the exams is available from the ETS website.
Have ETS send your official scores to the Division of Graduate Studies address listed above. You can indicate this when you take the exam or by contacting ETS as described on the ETS website.Applicants must have taken the GRE within the past five years. If the GRE was not completed in the last five years, the student must take the GRE again.
7. Application for graduate assistantship
Students who are interested in receiving a graduate assistantship must fill out the following application for funding form. This form should be sent to the Division of Graduate Studies address listed above.
