Merrill

Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology is a place where faculty, students and staff gather in classrooms, offices, conference rooms and hallways, in pursuit of a richer understanding of the world in which we live. At the Kent campus, Merrill Hall is the center of learning activities, where classroom space, lecture halls, faculty offices, an advising center and a student lounge support a bustling intellectual community. At regional campuses, dedicated faculty foster learning communities tailored to the unique culture of each campus. The Department has degree offerings at the associates, bachelors, master’s and doctoral levels, in a variety of areas of study, and offers classes at all eight campuses as well as online.

At the graduate level, the department offers a joint doctoral program with the University of Akron in four concentration areas: Criminology, Inequalities, Social Psychology, and the Sociology of Health and Mental Health. The majority of students accepted into the program receive funding in the form of graduate assistantships, which further prepare them for future careers in higher education with research and teaching experiences. Graduate-level courses and seminars are small in size. Experiences in and out of class engage and encourage students in developing a research orientation, publishing and presenting. The department is in the process of finalizing a new fully online Masters in Criminology and Justice Studies, with concentrations in Corrections, Global Security, Policing, and Victimology.

Undergraduates have the choice of two bachelor degree programs: Criminology & Justice Studies and Sociology. Many students choose to learn from both programs, and the process for double-majoring or majoring/minoring in both has been streamlined to improve the ease of doing so. A wide selection of interesting and challenging classes are regularly offered in both degree programs, and range in size from small-group seminars to large lecture-based courses, and the department advising center is there to guide students into selecting the best courses to fit their individual goals.
