2016 First Year Experience Summer Service Projects

Join forces with your future classmates and contribute your time and talents to an area organization. Working together to serve others is the best way to meet new people, develop leadership skills and jumpstart your involvement at Kent State Stark!

  • This activity is considered part of the FYE Success Series and will count towards out-of-class participation for UC 10097: DKS FYE.
  • If you attended the First Step program, you are encouraged to wear your Kent State t-shirt to your Summer Service Project.
  • Snacks will be provided but students are encouraged to pack a lunch.

1. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

SATURDAY, JUNE 4

DUTIES:
Painting

DRESS CODE:

  • Due to safety reasons, you must wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Wear sturdy shoes or work boots.
  • Dress in old clothing that could get ruined with paint.
  • Do not wear short-shorts, low-cut tops, sagging pants or inappropriate t-shirts.
  • No smoking.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THIS DATE:

  1. Register online with FYE Summer Service Projects (blue button above).
  2. Complete the online Habitat Registration and Liability Form prior to the project date.
    • Go to the Bederman Family Build page and click the VOLUNTEER button.
    • Find the June 4 date reserved for Stark/Kent Freshman Orientation [Painting].
    • Click the June 4 date box then press next.
    • Follow the prompts to register.
    • You will receive a confirmation email after you submit your registration.
  3. You will also be required to complete a Kent State waiver on site.

2. CAMPUS KITCHEN

THURSDAY, JUNE 30

Meal preparation

DRESS CODE:

  • Due to safety reasons, you must wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Do not wear tank tops, short-shorts, low-cut tops, sagging pants or inappropriate t-shirts.
  • Dress in casual clothing that can get dirty.
  • You will be required to wear a hair net (provided to you).
  • No smoking.

PARKING:

  • Parking is available in the lot next to Beall Hall - View map
  • Access the kitchen through the back door by the loading dock - sign on door says Campus Kitchen

3. STARK PARKS

THURSDAY, JULY 7

Trail clean-up

DRESS CODE:

  • Due to safety reasons, you must wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.
  • Dress in casual clothing that can get dirty. Stark Parks recommends long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
  • Do not wear short-shorts, low-cut tops, sagging pants or inappropriate t-shirts.
  • No smoking.

ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

  • Print and complete this WAIVER FORM. Bring it with you on your day of service.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:

  • Work or gardening gloves.
  • Bug repellent, water and sunscreen.

4. AKRON-CANTON REGIONAL FOOD BANK

MONDAY, JULY 25

DUTIES:
Sorting and inspecting food donations, labeling products for repackaging and packaging bulk items

DRESS CODE:

  • Due to safety reasons, you must wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • No jewelry.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. We suggest sneakers or tennis shoes.
  • Dress in casual clothing that can get dirty.
  • Dress in layers for the weather. Warehouse is NOT air conditioned.
  • Do not wear short-shorts, low-cut tops, sagging pants or inappropriate t-shirts.
  • No smoking.

ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

  1. Register online with FYE Summer Service Projects (blue button above).
  2. Register an ONLINE VOLUNTEER ACCOUNT with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank (one-time only).
  3. Log into the Volunteer Information Center to REGISTER YOUR DATE: Click on Calendar and select July 25 Kent State/FYE.

PARKING:

  • View driving directions to the Foodbank.
  • Volunteer parking is located in the front of the facility. Additional parking is located on the side of the facility, just follow the signs.
  • Enter through the red door and Foodbank staff will direct you to the sign-in area.

5. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORE

FRIDAY, AUG. 5

Stocking shelves, assembling furniture, light construction, store clean-up

DRESS CODE:

  • Due to safety reasons, you must wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Wear sturdy shoes or work boots.
  • Dress in casual clothing that can get dirty.
  • Do not wear short-shorts, low-cut tops, sagging pants or inappropriate t-shirts.
  • No smoking.

ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

  1. Print and complete this WAIVER OF LIABILITY. Bring it with you on your day of service. If you are under the age of 18, complete the included Minor Waiver.

PARKING:

  • Park close to the Ministry Office door in the parking spaces facing Raff Rd. Enter in the ReStore door (not the ministry office door).
