Alternative Spring Break 2013

Kent State University's Alternative Spring Break trips expose students to social justice and cultural issues through direct service, community visits, reflection, and a variety of cultural activities. The purpose of the trips is to engage students in service as well as to inform them about current social issues and encourage their on-going involvement in social change.

Ashtabula County, OH

Ashtabula County, Ohio is the largest (over 100 square miles) and most Northeastern of Ohio’s 88 counties. Students participating in this Alternative Spring Break trip will stay at the Ashtabula Campus of KSU and work with a variety of service groups and organizations located throughout the county. Transportation, lodging, and most meals are included in the $80 registration fee. March 24 – March 28, 2013.

Buffalo, NY

This trip will provide an opportunity for students to engage in a cultural exchange with our Native American neighbors living in the Buffalo area. We are planning to participate in a week-long, hands-on project with Habitat for Humanity, as well as immerse ourselves in the Native American culture. Transportation, lodging, and most meals are included in the $275 registration fee. March 24 – March 30, 2013.

Chicago, IL

Calling all Change Agents! Students will work with a variety of community organizations, from immigration programs to homeless outreach programs. Students will meet with community leaders to acquire a grassroots understanding of social issues and social change. Students also will be immersed in diverse Chicago cultural communities. $365 includes transportation, lodging and most meals. March 23 – March, 29, 2013.

Cleveland, OH

Cleveland rocks! Volunteers will spend the week on Cleveland’s near west side and have an opportunity to do direct service, talk to those impacted by poverty and discuss issues with local social service agencies. $115 includes food, transportation and lodging. March 24 – March 28, 2013.

Columbiana County, OH  

Stay close to home and make an impact! Students will stay at the East Liverpool Campus of KSU and provide direct service to area residents and local agencies. We will work with a variety of social service agencies and learn more about the Appalachian culture. $80 includes transportation, lodging and food. March 24 – March 29, 2013. A three day $60 option is also available (Sunday – Tuesday).

Washington, DC

Students will stay and work in the country’s largest federal homeless shelter, located in the shadow of the Capitol building. Volunteer work thoughout the week will be done at a women’s shelter, homeless shelter, environmental project and with D.C.’s HIV/ AIDS population. Students also will have the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill and other sites. Transportation, lodging, and most meals are included in the $275 registration fee. March 23 – March 29, 2013.

Youngstown, OH

This trip to Youngstown, Ohio will allow us to serve a variety of community partners in collaboration with the Ursuline sisters. Students will work with people from diverse cultures and assist in programs directed at children, the poor, elderly, and those suffering from HIV/ AIDS. The trip is a great option for those wanting to serve for a few days and explore a diverse range of social service agencies. Special service arrangements can be made for students with special interests/majors. Transportation, lodging, and most meals are included in the $80 registration fee. March 25 – March 27, 2013.
