WHAT SUBJECT AREAS REQUIRE PLACEMENT?
Kent State University currently requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in English (Writing), Mathematics, Foreign Language, and Chemistry. Students can demonstrate their knowledge and skills through scores on ACT, SAT, and/or specialized placement assessments. The chart below outlines the specific placement method required for each subject. Students without ACT or SAT scores will be asked to complete an alternative assessment.
|Subject Area||Placement Method|
|English (Writing)||* ACT English or SAT Writing scores|
|Foreign Language||Placement Assessment through WebCape|

* Students who believe ACT or SAT scores do not accurately reflect their writing ability can submit an essay. The highest ACT or SAT score will be used for placement.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT?
Placement assessments are designed to help your academic advisor determine which courses will provide the best opportunity for your success. Placement assessment scores will not be used to determine admission to Kent State University or any academic program.
WHERE DO I FIND THE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS?
Foreign Language, Mathematics, and Chemistry require online placement assessments. All online placement assessments can be found online by logging on your FlashLine account (flashline.kent.edu) and consulting your Next Steps Checklist located on the New@KSU tab. ACT, SAT, and/or COMPASS scores are used for English (Writing). WHERE CAN I TAKE THE ASSESSMENTS IF I DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER OR INTERNET ACCESS AT HOME?
You may complete your placement assessments from any computer with internet access, such as a public library. If you are in high school, you might also consider talking to your school guidance counselor to arrange a time to complete assessments at school. CAN I FAIL THE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS?
No. Placement assessments are not reported as a pass or fail grade, rather the assessments are used as a demonstration of a student's current knowledge and skill for specific subject areas such as English (Writing), Mathematics, Foreign Language, and Chemistry.
MAY I RETAKE ONE OR ALL OF THE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS IF I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH MY SCORE OR COURSE PLACEMENT?
Placement assessments are offered online through FlashLine.This method enables you to select the location, day, and time that would result in an accurate reflection of your knowledge and skill. Reassessment opportunities are available for the Foreign Language and Mathematics placement assessments. The highest score available in Mathematics at the time of registration will be used to select the appropriate course. For Foreign language the most recent score will be used.
Prior to reassessment in Mathematics, you are REQUIRED to complete the free online Learning Modules. Students who spend at least 18 hours or achieve an 80% mastery of topics are at a higher likelihood of placing higher than those who do not complete the Learning Modules. The reassessment must take place in a proctored environment either in the Math Emporium on the Kent Campus or through Proctor U. Foreign Language reassessments are possible as often as you choose to repeat the assessment.
|Subject||Retake available||Additional Information|
|Mathematics||Yes||Retake available after the completion of Learning Module|
WHAT IF I DO NOT TAKE THE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS PRIOR TO DESTINATION KENT STATE OR THE MEETING WITH MY ADVISOR?
Online placement assessments will not be offered during Destination Kent State or during your meeting with an academic advisor. Failure to complete online placement assessments prior to your campus visit will result in a delay in registering for those courses that require the completion of online assessments. Students without ACT or SAT scores will have an opportunity to take COMPASS on campus prior to their meeting with an academic advisor.
