This newly created concentration in Applied Communication prepares students for careers as communication specialists in small businesses, government offices and non-profit organizations.
Students in this concentration have the opportunity to take not only organizational communication and high-impact public speaking courses in Communication Studies, but also courses in such areas as website development, writing, public relations, photography and videography in the Journalism and Mass Communication program. Students will be able to customize an education with classes that concentrate on oral, written, organizational and visual communication skills because today's communication professionals are expected to use a wide variety of technologies to get messages across.
This degree will turn out graduates who are capable of handling public relations, visual design, public speaking, media relations and professional writing. Students enrolled in the applied communication concentration will receive grounding in communication theory, research, public speaking, professional writing, computer-based design and organizational communication and are also required to perform a high-quality professional internship.
The School of Communication Studies at Kent State University, which offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, is nationally recognized for its scholarship. Its students have received national recognition for their talents as speakers and debaters. The School has been named Ohio's distinguished program in communication for 2003-2004 by the Speech Communication Association of Ohio.
