Freedom Summer, Black History Month Film

In observation of Black History Month, Kent State University at Tuscarawas will present the film, Freedom Summer, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 19 in Founders Hall Auditorium. Sponsored by the Diversity Advisory Committee, admission to the film is free and open to the public. This PBS American Experience Film focuses on the 10 weeks of history changing events in Mississippi during the summer of 1964.

Freedom Summer is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Murder of Emmett Till).  According to the film’s producers, Firelight Films, “Freedom Summer highlights an overlooked but essential element of the civil rights movement: the patient and long term efforts by both outside activist and local citizens in Mississippi to organize communities and register black voters – even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death.”

Kent State Tuscarawas is located at 330 University Dr. N.E. in New Philadelphia.
