Editorial style at Kent State University closely follows the Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law, 2006 edition, and Webster’s New World College Dictionary, fourth edition, for all communications. In some instances, the AP Stylebook is superseded by university style for matters pertinent to Kent State University. University style items are presented alphabetically in this guide.
Correspondence by offices and departments need not follow the AP Stylebook. Rather, a reference guide such as the Gregg Reference Manual, 8th edition, by William A. Sabin (available in the University Bookstore) may be more appropriate for styling correspondence. But the Guide to Style contains helpful information in regards to university style, and you may wish to consult it when composing correspondence.
If you have a style question that is not addressed in the university style section, then consult the AP Stylebook. If you still are unsure or unable to find an answer, we invite you to call University Communications and Marketing at 330-672-2727 and ask to speak with an editor or post your question by e-mail to info@kent.edu. If you have a style point that you believe should be addressed in the university style section, please call us; we appreciate your interest and welcome your comments.
