University Communications and Marketing provides professional consultation and resources designed to assist the communications and marketing efforts of programs and departments throughout Kent State University's eight-campus network. This includes creative support by these UCM staffers:
Bob Christy, Coordinator, Photography, University Communications and Marketing
Bob Christy graduated from Kent State in 1995 (B.S., photojournalism) after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He covered the 1996 New Hampshire Primary for UPI and then returned to Ohio to work for the New Philadelphia Times-Reporter before joining UCM in 1999. His work has appeared in newspapers around the country and northeast Ohio, and received honors from the Ohio News Photographer's Association and the University Photographers of America Association.
Jeff Glidden, Photographer, University Communications and Marketing
Jeff Glidden, a 1987 graduate of Kent Stateâ€™s photojournalism program, has worked at the university for more than 15 years. He has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the University Photographers Association of America and has received numerous awards from the Ohio News Photographers Association.
Debi Gould, Senior Graphic Designer, University Communications and Marketing
Debi Gould has a B.A. (Journalism, Public Relations) from Kent State. Prior to joining UCM in 2009, she was a designer for Outreach Marketing and the College of Continuing Studies. Before coming to Kent State, she worked at graphic design and advertising agencies in Canton, Ohio, and San Antonio, Texas. She now designs marketing materials for a variety of campus clients. She is a graduate of the University's Leadership Academy.
Jon Jivan, Video Production Supervisor, University Communications and Marketing
Jon Jivan is a 2008 Kent State University graduate and holds a bachelor's degree in Electronic Media Production. A two-time Iraq war veteran, Jon served for 11 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. His works have earned first place awards at the Black Squirrel Flix Fest, the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts and the Cleveland 48 Hour Film Project.
Dan Karp, Executive Director, Creative Services
A 1987 graduate of Kent Stateâ€™s graphic design program, Dan Karp returns to lead University Communications and Marketing creative. Previously creative director at Wyse Advertising, Karp brings years of experience in marketing programs and communications. Having worked with literally hundreds of national clients on advertising, direct marketing, collateral and environmental graphics he focuses on creating meaningful work with measurable results. Karp began his career in Chicago where he worked for small design studios focusing on identity programs, annual reports and packaging. In addition to leading award-winning creative teams, he has been a guest speaker on creative marketing for clients and local marketing associations.
Jody Kovolyan, Project Coordinator, University Communications and Marketing
Jody Kovolyan joined Kent State in November 2005 with a background and B.B.A. in Marketing (Kent State University). Her previous work experience was centered on the purchasing function for several of Clevelandâ€™s leading electronic distribution companies.
Larry Langston, Graphic Designer, University Communications and Marketing
Larry Langston holds a bachelorâ€™s degree in Visual Communication Arts from Kent State University. He joined the UCM team in 2009. Prior to working for UCM, he was a graphic designer for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena. Previously, he worked as a graphic designer for OfficeMax at the corporate headquarters in Shaker Heights. Past responsibilities include creating concepts for new marketing campaigns and designing a wide variety of printed and digital materials -- from signage to complete marketing campaigns.
Dustin Lee, Video Production Supervisor, University Communications and Marketing
Dustin Lee graduated from Kent State in 2007 with a B.S. in electronic media production. He has worked as a freelance videographer and motion graphics designer for EDR Media in Beachwood, Ohio, and was previously a multimedia editor/producer for Advanstar Communications in North Olmsted, Ohio.
Susan Menassa, Senior Editorial / Communication Specialist, University Communications and Marketing
Susan Menassa has been with Kent State since 1996. Previously she has worked in media relations for the Bureau of Worker's Compensation in Columbus, as a reporter for the Leesburg/Commercial and the Tampa Tribune in Florida, and as a freelance writer in Greece. She has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of South Florida and a master's in journalism from The Ohio State University.
Nicholas Moore, Graphic Design Coordinator, University Communications and Marketing
Nicholas Moore, a 1990 graduate of Kent State, started his career at the university in the Office of Alumni Relations. He was part of the creative team responsible for the redesign of the award-winning quarterly magazine. He is now responsible for designing advertising and marketing materials for a variety of campus clients including the Kent State University Museum and the Alumni Association.
Phil B. Soencksen, Writer, University Communications and Marketing
A 1989 Kent State graduate (B. S. Advertising), Phil B. Soencksen joined the UCM team in 2010. He returns to the university with more than 20 years of advertising, marketing and branding experience, honed while working as a Creative Director and Associate Creative Director at several notable northeast Ohio advertising agencies. In his career, he has developed powerful, creative and strategic communications for a variety of well-known regional,national, and international companies in a wide variety of industries. Soenckenâ€™s work has been recognized with a variety of regional and international awards.

Jason Zehner, Senior Graphic Designer, University Communications and Marketing
Jason Zehner earned his bachelor's degree in journalism with a focus on newspaper and magazine design from Kent State University in 2004. Prior to joining UCM, he worked as a designer at Advance Display Systems, composing advertising and marketing material in their production department.
