Automation System

As early as 1975, Kent  State University began its quest to conserve energy.   Early automation systems were utilized to control costs by Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) scheduling, demand limiting and efficient controls. Demand management strategies, currently being looked at by other institutions today as an answer to their rising energy costs, have been in implementation for several decades here. The advent of user-friendly automation systems in the mid eighties had the University moving to create efficiencies via direct digital controls. As Kent State University continues to grow this technology keeps energy costs at a minimum.

Facilities Management System

Most buildings are connected to the automation systems network. Multiple desktop computers strategically located throughout the Kent campus receive real time information pertaining to HVAC systems. With over 50,000 data points which include room temperatures, humidity, duct pressures, fan speed, damper positions, boiler pressures and water levels, we can proactively respond to system failures. Some data points such as control output-signals that open or close valves, dampers, and start or stop fans are the result of complex, specialized computer programs that continuously analyze input information and precisely controls individual building equipment.

Energy Management staff continuously interpret information and interface with specialized programming to enhance and upgrade systems in an effort to improve comfort and conserve resources.
