How to Become a Faculty Mentor

It's easy! Take an interest in your undergraduate students as individuals. Notice the ones in your classes who show curiosity or perform at a high level. Assess the potential of students majoring in your discipline for individualized study. Explore problem-based or inquiry- based learning in your courses as a first step in introducing students to organizing their knowledge and skill to focus on a specific question. Talk to colleagues who are working with undergraduates to find out how they got started. Respond positively to students who come to you with ideas or requests for guidance. At the same time, calculate how much time and energy you can realistically apply to working with such students. Be realistic about your priorities, including those emphasized by the reward system. Then just do it!
