Director's Welcome | School of Visual Communication Design | Kent State University
THOSE OF US CHALLENGED WITH THE TASK OF TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION OF VISUAL COMMUNICATORS RECOGNIZE THE CONTEMPORARY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT REQUIRES COLLABORATION WITH OUR PEERS ACROSS DISCIPLINARY LINES.
Dear Students, Parents, and Alumni:
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Kent State University School of Visual Communication Design.
I joined the Kent State University campus as Director of the School of Visual Communication Design July of 2007, after two decades with the Indiana University system. It was for many reasons this decision was a simple one to make. Built on a history of providing a challenging and stimulating learning environment, the school has a distinguished reputation as a top tier program for 2D and 3D graphic design, illustration, and photography. Accredited by NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, our school is one in which theory and practice are wholly integrated and mutually honored. Our undergraduate programs are designed to provide students with a strong design foundation, professional training in skills and knowledge development, and a liberal arts education essential to a lifetime of learning. Our graduate programs are tailored to meet the individualized creative and career objectives of our students.
Those of us challenged with the task of teaching the next generation of visual communicators recognize the contemporary learning environment requires collaboration with our peers across disciplinary lines. Together with the Schools of Communication Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Library and Information Sciences, the School of Visual Communication Design is located in the College of Communication and Information. This unique coalition provides an opportunity for our students and faculty to gain a truly interdisciplinary perspective.
To learn more about our School, its students, alumni and faculty, I invite you to visit our website, vcd.kent.edu, created by members of Glyphix, an award winning, student design studio housed within our school. Here you will learn our nationally recognized faculty members bring a wealth of expertise to the classroom and a strong commitment to academic excellence. They are practicing professionals possessing impressive client lists, publication and exhibition records, and awards for teaching and creative endeavors. The site also highlights student work and an noteworthy list of alumni who demonstrate that the best measure of academic success can be found in the individual accomplishments of its graduates.
Our graduates are some of the most sought after in the nation. If you are a graduate of our program or simply interested in their professional activities, visit our alumni page, vcd/resources/alumni.html. Among our alumni are illustrators of children’s books, the Chief Creative Director of Burrell, the Art Director for Cleveland Magazine, owners of Digiknow, WhiteSpace, Aufuldish & Warinner, and Browkaw Motion, to name just a few. We have alumni working as designers for Yahoo! 360º, Discovery Channel, MTV, and as illustrators and designers for American Greetings. Graduates of our programs have also joined the faculties of over thirty colleges and universities. If we haven’t heard from you in awhile, please let us know of your latest professional accomplishments.
I am deeply honored by my appointment to Kent State University and excited by the rich design community of Northeast Ohio. Together with my colleagues, I look forward to making you feel as welcome on our campus as I have been made to feel.
