Jessica Barness joined the faculty in the School of Visual Communication Design in 2012. She holds an MFA in Design with a minor in Writing Studies from the University of Minnesota, and an MA and BA in Art from the University of Northern Iowa. Previously, she taught graphic design courses at the University of Minnesota and worked in design and research with Conway+Schulte Architects in Minneapolis, MN. She also practiced professionally for a number of years as a senior product designer and design development manager in Chicago, IL.
Jessica's areas of expertise are in interaction design, sound in design, graphic design, critical making/prototyping and visual rhetoric & culture. Most recently, she has worked with interactive media and writing technologies to explore the reshaping and delivery of information. Her audio-visual research has been exhibited at FILE Electronic Language Festival (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo), HASTAC 2013 (Toronto) and published in the journal Currents in Electronic Literacy. She has also given presentations on digital scholarship and design education at AIGA, UCDA and M/MLA conferences. Additionally, her book and publication designs have won awards as part of juried exhibitions hosted by the College Book Art Association and the University & College Designers Association.
