"It showed me that some teachers really care about your education and expanding your mind. I wish I could interact with these people eight periods of the day, rather than just one."

- A Maplewood high school student referring to his experience during a creative writing workshop with Kent State Students

The Wick Poetry Center Outreach Program offers many services to local schools, community organizations and senior centers, including poetry writing workshops, readings, in-service teacher development and discussion groups. The goal is to provide an understanding of and appreciation for poetry, develop literacy and promote human growth within the context of schools and communities.

The outreach program extends learning beyond the campus and takes Kent State students into the community, creating exciting educational experiences and creative service-learning courses offered through the Department of English help teach Kent State students interested in teaching and writing the skills needed to conduct their own poetry writing workshops for students of all ages. The program also places these student-teachers in local classrooms and community centers to lead poetry workshops. The courses culminate with "Giving Voice," a performance combining poetry and music by local students and teachers at Kent State University .
