National Teen Writing Contest

To celebrate National Poetry Month, the Wick Poetry Center will host a teen writing contest for high school students (grades 9-12) throughout the nation. Students may upload one poem between February 15 and April 30, 2013.

The entry fee is $5 per submission.

The winning poet & poet’s school will each receive $500. The Wick Poetry Center will bring the winning poet & guest to Kent State University in September 2013 to read during our yearly Celebrating Our Own event. The second place winner & school will receive $250.


1. The competition is open to poets (grades 9-12) writing in any language. If the poem is not in English, please included an English translation.

2. Submissions must consist of one unpublished poem of any length. You may submit more than one poem, provided that you include it in a separate entry with a separate entry fee.

3. The poet's name MUST NOT appear on the poem.

4. Include the following information in the “Cover Letter” box: your name, the name of your school, your address, email address, telephone number, and the title of your poem.

5. The poem may be submitted to other contests and journals, but the poet must notify the Wick Poetry Center immediately if the poem is accepted for publication elsewhere.

6. The winner will be announced in the summer.
