The Wick Poetry Center sponsors the Wick Poetry Chapbook Competition, which selects two chapbooks of poetry to be published annually by the Kent State University Press. The chapbooks are chosen from two competitions: a student competition (open to anyone enrolled in an Ohio college or university) and an open competition (open to anyone living in Ohio). Past chapbook authors have gone on to publish additional full-length books and to establish themselves in successful careers as teachers and writers.
Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize
In addition, the Wick Poetry Center sponsors the Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize. This prize is offered annually to a poet who has not previously published a full-length collection of poems. The prize awards the winner with $2,500 and publication of his or her first full-length book of poetry by the Kent State University Press. The judge and the winner perform a reading together at Kent State and conduct writing workshops for students.
Other publications include the annual Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Scholarship Award broadside of winning student poems. The Wick Poetry Center awards more than $20,000 annually in tuition scholarships to Kent State. Four undergraduate students receive one-time awards each year and three to four entering freshmen receive scholarships renewable for up to four years. This broadside is available for free from the Wick Poetry Center.
