From Borges' Dreamtigers,
the opening lines of his poem, "The Moon":
History tells us how …
… a man
Conceived the unconscionable plan
Of making an abridgment of the universe
… and with infininte zest
He towered his screed up, lofty and
Strenuous, polished it, spoke the final verse.
About to offer his thanks to fortune,
He lifted up his eyes and saw a burnished
Disc in the air and realized, stunned,
That somehow he had forgotten the moon.
Astonishing in a way....
That one might feel himself on the very brink of fathoming the Universe -
and be confronted with ... the moon.
Metaphorically, it could be said that
Women's Studies - as a program of study - is a tribute to the forgotten moon.
And a tribute to our realization that despite the remarkable bodies of knowledge amassed by mankind over these millenia,
much has gone unnoticed; much has been suppressed - consciously, deliberately hidden or obliterated; and much has been forgotten.

A Description of the Minor Program
The Women's Studies Program at Kent State University honors the purpose and work of Women's Studies programs and departments worldwide. Our program encourages students to explore the lives, stories, roles and places of women in human societies from a variety of perspectives - as well as to examine the issues inherent in such material. The program permits students to cross the borders between one discipline and another as they re-consider human knowledge ... remembering the second sex.
