November 17, 1:30 , Kent Student Center Governance Chambers Dr. Susan Iverson, TLCS, Sticky floors and glass ceilings: Barriers to women’s advancement Dr. Iverson will present her research on women, leadership, and advancement.
November 19, 4:00, Kent Student Center Multicultural Center Dr. Andrew Lepp, SELS, People and Parks: Stories of Conservation and Development in Uganda Dr. Lepp will share research and stories from his visits to Uganda, East Africa. A highlight: Studies from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to over 350 mountain gorillas, and Kibale National Park, home to over 1,000 chimpanzees.
November 20, 1:00 Kent Student Center Governance Chambers Dr. Diane Kerr, ACHVE, HIV/AIDS in the US and the World: Winning the Battle, but Losing the War.Dr. Kerr will reflect on her research on HIV/AIDS, the role of better education and treatment, the contextual challenges of leadership, access, ignorance, etc.
November 20, 7:00 Kent Student Center Dr. Vilma Seeberg, Universal primary education, gender equality, empowering women
Dr. Seeberg will be telling stories of Han Chinese, Tibetan, and Muslim girls in Western China, illustrating women’s empowerment even in places at the outer edge of the world. Her talk will celebrate these girls' capacity to envision a new path and future, challenging patriarchy, breaking the vicious cycle of poverty.
NOV. 12 Barbara Oakley Lecture: “Bad to the Bone: Horrors!—Can Our Genes Help Make Us Evil?” The talk will be held Wednesday, November 12, 7:00 PM at Strosacker Auditorium, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue , Cleveland , Ohio 44106 . Award-winning Plain Dealer journalist Regina Brett and her daughter Gabrielle
A discussion of their experiences with breast cancer. Regina has undergone both
chemotherapy and radiation treatments, subsequently a prophylactic double-mastectomy;
Gabrielle chose to undergo a preventative double mastectomy.
A brief reception will follow.

Throughout the year (particularly during March, Women’s History month), the Women’s Studies Program at Kent State University sponsors and co-sponsors speakers and events with relevance to students and faculty. In years past, speakers have included Elaine Brown (African-American writer, researcher, activist, and former Black Panther Party leader); Lynn Peril, author of Pink Think: Becoming a Woman in Many Uneasy Lessons; and the well-known second wave feminist author and activist, Mary Daly.
