Jeanne S. 
Director

Jeanne Smith is the Director of the Writing Commons and an Associate Lecturer in the Department of English.  She teaches College Writing I and II, Introduction to Technical Writing, Principles of Technical Writing, Advanced Business and Professional Writing, Argumentative Prose, Expository Prose, as well as other writing courses and tutor-training courses. She has been working in the Commons for 12 years, and teaching writing for 34 years. She coordinates service learning experiences, writing center-related internships, individual investigations, and directs composition-related Honors Theses. She is the past president of the East Central Writing Centers Association and co-founder of the Northeast Ohio Writing Centers Association. She graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in English concentrating on rhetoric and composition. Her research interests include writing centers, reflective practice, collaborative learning, and pedagogy. She is currently studying writer metacognition and self-regulation in revision as well as diversity issues in writing centers and community collaboration. She serves on the University Teaching Council and the Writing Program Committee.

Barbara G.
Assistant Director

Barbara is a graduate student studying Literacy, Rhetoric, and Social Practice. She has been an Assistant Director at the Writing Commons for two semesters. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the cooperation among the staff and the way in which writers find value in discussing writing. Her specialties are reading and sustainability. Something she would like to share with writers is that she studies language and environmental justice. She says, “this has helped me to learn to listen to writers.”

Christine O.
Assistant Director

Christine is a Doctoral Candidate studying Literacy, Rhetoric, and Social Practice. She is an Assistant Director here at the Writing Commons and this is her first semester! Her favorite thing about the writing commons is the overall enthusiasm everyone brings concerning writing!

Anna A.

Anna is a senior majoring in Teaching English as a Second Language, minoring in Japanese, and she currently holds a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant who has worked in the Writing Commons for a year and a half. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the great conversations with great people and she specializes in working with ELL students, brainstorming, and organizing.

Christine A.

Christine is a junior Psychology major and this is her first semester as an Office Assistant at the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is how friendly it is.

Danielle B.

Danielle is a junior Special Education major who started tutoring at the Writing Commons this semester. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the environment and she specializes in brainstorming.

Taylour B.

Taylour is a senior Educational Studies major with minors in English and Writing. She is a volunteer tutor who has been at the Writing Commons for two years. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that it’s such a welcoming atmosphere. It's a space where everyone is welcome--and you feel comfortable when you step inside our space.

Daniel B.

Daniel is a sophomore majoring in Managerial Marketing who has tutored in the Writing Commons for one semester. His favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the overall relaxed environment that the Writing Commons provides. Both the writer and tutor feel comfortable in sessions which make for productive outcomes! His specialties include brainstorming, outlining, and business writing. He currently works with the Marketing Committee and is presenting at ECWCA this year.

Shayanne B.

Shayanne is a senior Electronic Media Production major. This is her second semester tutoring at the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that it caters to all writers, of all levels, in all steps of the writing process. She says “the Writing Commons leaves no one behind.” Shayanne specializes in brainstorming. Shayanne would like to share that she has worked with a few other tutors to formulate a Newsletter for the Writing Commons and she did a research project on the nonverbal gestures and components exerted by both the tutor and writer during the tutoring session. She has used those findings to further her tutoring process so the writer can get the most out of their session.

Monique B.

Monique is a sophomore studying Human Development and Family Studies. She has been a tutor at the Writing Commons for a semester. Her favorite thing about the writing commons is getting to work with amazing tutors and writers, and learning new things every day.
Monique specializes in brainstorming and organization. 

Jason C.

Jason is a graduate student double majoring in History and Law with minors in English and Political Science. He is a tutor who has worked at the Writing Commons as an undergrad and as a grad student. His favorite thing about the Writing Commons is learning new information from the content of student’s papers. Jason specializes in argumentative prose and assisting ESL writers and is one of the founders of International Conversation Hour. 

Elena C.

Elena is a senior studying Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Public Relations. She has been tutoring at the Writing Commons for two years. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the collaborative environment. She loves being able to learn from the broad variety of students and other tutors' knowledge to share our skills. Her specialties are outlining, journalistic pieces, AP style, speech writing, research tactics and general organization strategies. She is the director of all our marketing operations here. She loves research, politics, pop culture and current events.

Robin C.

Robin is a graduate student studying Library and Information Science. She is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant who has worked in the Writing Commons since fall 2015. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the resources and she specializes in working with ELL students, research, and outlining. She works on the Web Development Committee and has presented at four writing center conferences since 2012. Her preferred pronouns are she, her, and hers.

McKenna D.

McKenna is a junior English major minoring in Marketing. She is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant who has worked in the Writing Commons since this past fall semester. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the chill environment and she specializes in brainstorming, outlining, and teaching writers how to edit their own paper.

Megan D.

Megan is a senior double majoring in Criminology and Sociology. She is a hybrid tutor, Office Assistant, and all around Renaissance woman who has worked in the Writing Commons for three semesters. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that this is the only place on campus where there will be a serious conversation about Kant on one side of the room and an equally serious conversation about Spongebob on the other. You'll be hard pressed to find a more intelligent group of individuals. Her specialty is brainstorming. She says, “I have found that students who need help with this stage often come in overwhelmed and unsure of themselves, and brainstorming is a great way to draw out all the ideas and information they already have. It is, in my opinion, the most rewarding part of the process because the writer is able to see the progress they made and feel more confident in what they already knew. In this stage especially, the writer already has a multitude of ideas, I just help them see that.”

Donald (Finch) F.

Finch is a senior majoring in Mathematics with minors in Physics and Computer Science. He has been a tutor for two years at the Writing Commons. His favorite part of working at the Writing Commons is seeing the expression of pride and accomplishment on a writer's face at the end of a session. Finch specializes in thesis development, argumentation writing and research.

Aric H.

Aric is a graduate student studying Library and Information Science. He is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant who has worked in the Writing Commons for two years. His favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the collaborative environment and he specializes in outlining, brainstorming and ESL sessions.

Cait H.

Cait is a sophomore double Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology major. This is her second semester as an Office Assistant at the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that everyone here is so helpful and friendly. 

Ashley F.

Ashley is a graduate student who is studying Speech-Language Pathology. This is her second semester as a tutor at the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the welcoming environment and abundance of resources. Ashley specializes in thesis statements, outlining, and revising. She is also the Co-Coordinator of International Conversation Hour.

Dylyn H. 

Dylyn is a senior majoring in English with Minors in Writing and Communication Studies. He is a Mentor Tutor who has been working in the Writing Commons for eight semesters. His favorite part of working at the Writing Commons is that it combines his favorite hobbies: writing and helping others in their development! Dylyn specializes in prewriting, brainstorming, outlining, mind-mapping, creative writing, and introductions/conclusions. Dylyn has been a part of the Writing Commons’ Resource Committee and Marketing Committee for two years, part of the Mentoring/Management Team for a year and a half, a participant in International Conversation Hour for a year, and recently worked to develop the Writing Commons’ Ambassador Program (which he currently co-coordinate).

Jordan H.

Jordan is a junior studying English with a double minor in Psychology and Writing. She has been a tutor at the Writing Commons for two semesters. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the welcoming atmosphere, whether you're a fellow tutor or a writer in need! Jordan specializes in brainstorming, outlining, and creative writing.

Melissa H.

Melissa is a second year student studying Nursing with a minor in Public Health and a Disabilities Studies certificate. She is the Office Manager at the Writing Commons as well as a tutor and has been here for four semesters. She love collaborating with writers to help them get their ideas out of their brain and onto paper in a way that others can understand. Melissa specializes in working with ELL writers, brainstorming, and organization. She is also a Co-Coordinator for International Conversation Hour.

Libby J.

Libby is a junior Theatre Studies major with a minor in English. She is an Office Assistant who just started this semester! Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the open and friendly atmosphere. 

Haley K.

Haley is a sophomore majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Human Resource Management. This is her first semester as an Office Assistant in the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the opportunity to get involved in various ways.

Jordan K.

Jordan is a junior Digital Media Production major. He has been a tutor here at the Writing Commons for two semesters. His favorite thing about the Writing Commons is being able to work with a diverse student body. Jordan specializes in brainstorming, outlining, considering alternative perspectives. Jordan is involved in the Marketing and Resources Committees.

Tyler K.

Tyler is a graduate student majoring in Library and Information Sciences. He is a tutor who has been working in the Writing Commons for one year. His favorite thing about working at the Writing Commons is helping writers learn techniques and tools that they can use independently, and he specializes in brainstorming, argumentative papers, and resumes, and because he is in school to become a college librarian, he especially enjoys helping writers with research questions. His preferred pronouns are he/his/him.

Joseph L.

Joey is a senior with an English Major and a Writing Minor with a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate. He has been a tutor at the Writing Commons for two and a half years. His favorite thing about working at the Writing Commons is being able to demonstrably help people improve their craft and their confidence. He loves working on brainstorming assignments and savors every opportunity to help fellow creative writers.

Lydia L.

Lydia is a senior majoring in Integrated Language Arts and minoring in Writing. She is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant and has been at the Writing Commons for two years. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the variety of people we have working here and the variety of people we're able to help. Lydia specializes in creative writing, brainstorming, and outlining. Lydia would also like to share that she presented at the 2016 International Writing Center Association conference and the 2017 North East Ohio Writing Center Association's conference. She also loves cats.

Devon “Stairs” M.

Stairs is a senior studying English, Computer Design, Animation, and Video Game Design with a minor in Psychology who has been tutoring here at the Writing Commons since Fall 2016. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the diversity in problem solving solutions. She specializes in creative writing. She is president of the Writers' Workshop club, membership chair of English Club, Vice President of the English Honorary Society Sigma Tau Delta. She is also on the Marketing committee here at the Writing Commons. Her preference is to go by the name Stairs.

Aliyana P.

Aliyana is a junior Applied Communication major with a minor in Public Relations. This is her first semester as an Office Assistant in the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the willingness to help students, flexibility as an employee, and the convenient location to classes and home. Aliyana is a member of the Marketing committee and helps out with International Conversation Hour. She identifies as 'her', or 'she'.

Marissa P.

Marissa is a junior Psychology major who has been an Office Assistant at the Writing Commons since Fall 2016. One of her favorite things about the Writing Commons is being able to meet students from all over the world.

Tara R.

Tara is a junior majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and double minoring in Chemistry and English. She is a tutor who has been working in the Writing Commons since Fall 2016. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the kind and helpful atmosphere and she specializes in research, technical writing, and argumentative writing. Tara researches and advocates for helping science majors become better writers!

Marisa S.

Marisa is a junior Psychology major who has been tutoring at the Writing Commons since Fall 2016. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the atmosphere and she specializes in research.

Niccole S.

Niccole is a graduate student studying English. She is a tutor who has worked in the Writing Commons for two years. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is talking about writing and working with writers to find the styles and subjects that suit them best! Her specialties include brainstorming, creative writing, dissertations, and theses. Finally, she has a background in both Science and English, so she can work with a lot of different material!

Spencer S.

Spencer is a sophomore double major in Political Science and Philosophy. He just started as a tutor in the Writing Commons this semester! One of his favorite things about the Writing Commons is that it is always a welcoming environment. Spencer specializes in brainstorming and outlining. 

Marielle S.

Marielle is a sophomore studying Speech Pathology and Audiology (major), Psychology (minor), and Disability Studies and Community Inclusion (certificate). She is a tutor who has worked in the Writing Commons for two semesters. Her favorite part of being a tutor is helping writers find clarity and value in their own writing and she specializes in research papers, outlining, and thesis development.

Jacquelyn S.

Jacquelyn is a sophomore majoring in Economics, with minors in International Business and Political Science. This is her first semester as a tutor in the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that it is a very peaceful environment and her specialties include outlining, organization, flow, and creative writing.

Madeline S.

Madeline is a junior Psychology and Sociology double major. She has been a tutor here at the Writing Commons for four semesters. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is that she loves the openness of the staff and their willingness to collaborate. Madeline says “it's reassuring to know that if the writer or I can't find the answer to a question, there is a vast amount of knowledge sitting just outside.” She specializes in brainstorming, saying it “is one of my favorite things to do with writers. Getting to be a soundboard for them to bounce their ideas off of creates this wonderful creative energy.” Madeline has been on the Resources and Marketing committees and typically likes doing work that connects the Writing Commons with other offices around campuses because she believe there is often a great deal of overlap in the services student centered offices offer. Her preferred pronouns are her/hers/she.

Hannah W.

Hannah is a sophomore with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. This is her second semester as a tutor at the Writing Commons. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is the people she works with! Hannah says, “they're all so friendly and willing to help.” Her specialty is AP style and news writing. 

Rachel W.

Rachel is a junior double majoring in Speech Pathology and Audiology with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. She is a hybrid tutor and Office Assistant and started her second semester at the Writing Commons this semester. Her favorite thing about the Writing Commons is seeing writers learn new concepts and grow in their abilities! Her favorite thing to help writers with is outlining their ideas and helping them organize their thoughts!
