Writing Commons and Local High School to Collaborate: Fall 2010Posted Sep. 13, 2010
This semester, undergraduates enrolled in a new Writing Commons tutor-training course, "Introduction to Tutorial Practice," will collaborate with students and faculty at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent to establish the high school's first writing center. Under a grant from the Office of Experiential Education and Civic Engagement, the students and faculty involved in the project will make presentations at local, regional, national and international conferences on the outcomes of the project. The Writing Commons is proud to initiate this campus/community partnership.
KSU Writing Commons Director, Jeanne Smith (NTT-Kent), developed the new course to achieve several goals:
• Help high school students to meet Ohio language arts standards, and to develop overall writing skills.
• Create mentoring relationships between college and high school students.
• Help create and sustain peer-based writing centers in local high schools, allowing high school students mentor each other.
• Increase training and professionalization of the undergraduate tutoring staff in the Writing Commons
• Support the university's Strategic Plan for community involvement and student engagement.
• Increase university/community partnerships.
• Produce research into service learning, experiential learning, and engaged learning.
• Create distance education options for undergraduates.
• Increase community engagement of our students.
Fall 2010 marks the beginning of what Smith hopes will be a continuous partnership between the campus writing center and a variety of community partners across Northeast Ohio. "I am thrilled to see the project taking shape," Smith said. "I see it as good for the university, good for the community, good for the Writing Commons, and good for advancing research into community/university academic partnerships. This is one of those projects that benefit everyone!"
