M.A. in Art Education Online Program

Masters of Art in Art Education Online

The online MA in Art Education provides the same rigorous curriculum as the campus-based program. This distance-learning program is designed for pre-K-12 art educators in public and private schools, museums, and enrichment classes who wish to continue with graduate study in the field of art education.

Our program addresses all of the visual arts, as defined by the National Art Education Association, to include both contemporary art and design.  Addressing both will prepare you to make a powerful contribution in guiding students in their cognitive, social, and emotional development in preparation for college, career, and citizenry.

Highlights include:

• Opportunities for research focus in a variety of specializations

• Coursework in design education and contemporary art

• Online studio art courses

• No required campus attendance

Please refer to our graduate admissions page for information on how to apply.

Graduates will develop a focused competence in the visual arts as well as an intellectual understanding of the history and current issues of the field of art education. The program at Kent State provides coursework in studio practice and art history in conjunction with theoretical research in art education pedagogy. Once the candidacy exam is passed, students may choose a thesis or project option as a capstone experience. The thesis culminates in a document that is based on scholarly research on an art education-related topic. The master’s project involves action research which focuses on participant/researcher studies in curriculum, classroom settings, grant implementation, and/or community-based projects. The MA program is 100% online with no required campus attendance. Students in the program complete a 34-credit course of study in two years. You may also choose a hybrid degree and combine elements of the online program with campus-based classes to suit your particular schedule.

The art education program at Kent State provides an arena for students to pursue research in a variety of specializations including, but not limited to, inclusive educational practices and special needs students, diversity as it relates to gender, multiculturalism and globalization, and the needs of 21st century learners. Students will also take a course in pre-K-12 Design Education, a new pedagogical process that creates a collaborative problem-solving environment in K-12 classrooms. Four full-time resident faculty members are able to provide ample support and guidance throughout the entire program, culminating in the thesis and project completion.
