Colorguard Auditions

The Kent State University Colorguard is the most vibrant part of the Marching Golden Flashes visual performance. 

PRE-AUDITION CLINIC

There will be a pre-audition clinic to help prepare potential members for their final audition on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 9 am - 5 p.m.

colorguard LIVE AUDITION

Audition for the 2018 Colorguard are Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

colorguard VIDEO AUDITION (In Person auditions preferred)

Students interested in Colorguard are encouraged to audition on-campus and in person. However, if you need to do a video audition, please contact the Bands Office to make arrangements before the June 9, 2018 due date. 

Membership in the Kent State University Colorguard is determined by an audition every summer. Candidates will be asked to perform 3 rounds of material for a panel of judges that include the following elements:

  1. Basic fundamentals with correct technique and execution (see below for a list of required fundamentals)
  2. A flag routine that will be taught during the audition
  3. A dance routine that will be taught during the audition

FUNDAMENTALS ROUND

Candidates should know and be proficient in the performance of the following fundamentals that are scored on the basis of correct technique, execution, and completion of each skill. These rudiments are a huge part of our Pregame performances at each home game as well as the basis of the choreographed routines performed at halftime:

Flag Basics

  • Drop Spins
  • Flutters
  • Carving

Flag Tosses

  • Pop Toss
  • Silk Toss
  • 45 Toss

Dance Basics

  • Jazz Walks
  • Jazz Runs
  • Chasse
  • Passe
  • Saute

FLAG ROUTINE ROUND

A flag routine will be taught at auditions and performed for the judges, who will look for knowledge of the routine, performance quality, and overall execution.

A dance routine will be taught at auditions and performed for the judges, who will look for knowledge of the routine, performance quality, and overall execution.
