Health Sciences

The School of Health Sciences is committed to providing an academic environment that promotes the intellectual and scholarly activity of our students in order for them to meet their professional career goals. We provide programs that meet the comprehensive educational and technological demands of the disciplines represented in the school.


Those disciplines include athletic training, exercise science, health education and promotion, integrated health studies, nutrition/dietetics, and speech pathology and audiology. Fundamental is the professional preparation and development of our students so that they may excel and provide leadership to their respective disciplines.

Athletic Training

Athletic training is an allied health profession dealing with the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. Athletic trainers are unique health care providers who work as part of a health care team to provide high-quality care in a variety of health care settings. Athletic trainers are certified by the Board of Certification (BOC) and licensed in the state of Ohio by the Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers’ Board. Kent State University’s program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Kent State’s Athletic Training Education Program offers a challenging curriculum preparing students for careers in the athletic training profession and related fields. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, students engage in individualized competency assessments with the faculty and clinical staff. This one-on-one instruction provides the optimal mix of challenge and support facilitating learning-over-time with an increasing level of difficulty enabling students to master the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to succeed. Students in Kent State’s Athletic Training Program work in two athletic training rooms while in their on-campus clinical rotations. One of those facilities is the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center athletic training room. The sports that primarily work out of that facility are men’s basketball, women’s basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, volleyball and cross country. The other athletic training room is located at the football stadium. The Athletic Training Education Program has outstanding facilities that house state-of-the-art equipment essential to the acquisition of clinical and academic skills. The program recently expanded its Competency Laboratory to include a General Skills Labs; a Modality Lab; and a Therapeutic Rehabilitation Lab with a Biodex Inc. Isokinetic Dynamometer. Additionally, the Athletic Training Suite houses the offices of the program coordinator and faculty, to ensure students easy access.

Nutrition and Dietetics

The Nutrition and Dietetics Program provides preparation for careers as registered dietitians in medical and health care centers, public health agencies, industries and universities. The curriculum meets the Didactic Program in Dietetics requirements of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and graduates are eligible for admission to accredited internships. Affiliate membership in the Academy is available to students electing this option. Upon successful completion of the dietetic internship, students are eligible to sit for the registration examination to become a registered dietitian. The program provides undergraduate and graduate students majoring in nutrition the opportunity to participate in university and community service projects through the Center of Nutrition Outreach. The program provides nutrition education on weight control, cardiovascular/ hypertension, digestive disorders, diabetes, eating disorders, general nutrition/wellness, pediatric nutrition, childhood obesity, sports nutrition, vegetarian, food allergies and food safety. The Center offers its services to all Kent State students and employees and to Portage County community members.

Health Education and Promotion

The Health Education and Promotion Program offers degrees in community health education, school health education and health/ physical education (HPE, dual major with dual licensure).

  • The Community Health Education Program teaches competencies from the National Commission on Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC). The program integrates general education, specialized education and professional coursework. An internship in a community health setting is a requirement of the program. The program prepares individuals for positions as community health educators with voluntary, government and commercial health agencies. The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded upon completion of the program.
  • The School Health Education Program is composed of coursework that enables students who complete the program to secure teaching licensure for grades Pre-K through 12 from the Ohio Department of Education. In the most recent accreditation evaluation of the program, it was cited as an “excellent undergraduate program that could be a model for others” by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The mission and purpose of the School Health Education Program is to prepare students for employment as teachers in public and private schools.
  • The Health and Physical Education Program is a five-year program that contains all requirements needed to secure teaching licenses in both health and physical education from the Ohio Department of Education (grades Pre-K through 12). For outstanding students, the option of enrolling in a combined baccalaureate/master’s degree program of studies is available.

Exercise Science

The exercise science major has three concentrations. The overall purpose of the major is to promote the development of a healthy physically active lifestyle and prepare students for teaching, exercise science, and fitness professions. Students will acquire knowledge of human movement, requisite skills, and competencies in their area of specialization.

  • The exercise specialist concentration is dedicated to serving its students by integrating clinical application with academic excellence while preparing students for careers in cardiac rehabilitation, wellness, or strength and conditioning.
  • The exercise physiologist concentration provides students with extensive coursework in exercise science and other basic sciences. The course of study culminates with a semester of practical experience in the Exercise Science Research Laboratory. Relative to the Exercise Specialist concentration there are fewer required courses. Instead, Exercise Physiology students are required to take a greater number of elective courses. These elective courses can be specifically tailored by the student and their advisor to meet the needed pre-requisites for a variety of health-related graduate programs including but not limited to: Exercise Science, Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Nursing, and Podiatry.
  • The Pre-Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy concentration provides students with extensive coursework to prepare for further graduate study in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy. Students will gain hands-on experience through a supervised internship and laboratory research.

The equipment and space that compose the Exercise Physiology Laboratory at Kent State University, which includes approximately 2100 square feet of teaching and research laboratory space, offers students state-of-the-art tools for assessing a variety of exercise and related variables. This advanced equipment is defined for teaching and research in exercise testing, environmental and general physiology, behavioral medicine and exercise therapy for special populations (i.e., patients with Parkinson’s disease).

Integrated Health Studies

The Bachelor of Science in Integrated Health Studies is designed for students interested in pursuing studies related to the health and medical professions.

The health sciences concentration includes a strong basic science core (biology, chemistry, physics), as well as an applied science core (physiology of exercise, nutrition). Students majoring in integrated health studies in the health sciences concentration will be prepared for science-based graduate programs, especially physical or occupational therapy, physician assistant, and other advanced study options.

  • The health services concentration provides a comprehensive study of health professions, human development, and human services. Students completing the program find careers in the service delivery sector of the health care industry such as nonprofit and/or government agencies (e.g., health departments, national/ state/local health organizations). The health services program also is designed to provide students in associate degree programs in the allied health areas, such as physical or occupational therapy assisting technology, with the opportunity to obtain a highly relevant bachelor’s degree.

Speech Pathology and Audiology

We also offer a combined bachelor’s/master’s program in speech pathology, master’s degree in speech pathology, and the doctor of audiology that meet the professional certification requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In order to practice in the fields of speech language pathology or audiology, students must complete either the master’s degree in speech pathology or the Au.D. degree in audiology. Graduate students in speech pathology and audiology can apply for special traineeships funded through federal grants in addition to university graduate assistantships and teaching fellowships. Speech pathologists and audiologists find employment in rehabilitation centers, hospitals, public schools, clinics, private practice and government agencies. 

Students studying Speech Pathology and Audiology complete clinical placements at our on-campus speech and hearing clinic and off-campus at metropolitan and community hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, medical practices and schools throughout Northeast Ohio. State-of-the-art equipment and laboratory facilities are available for teaching and research purposes. Specialty laboratories include facilities in motor-speech control, voice, swallowing, speech science, aural rehabilitation, auditory physiology, acoustics, accent reduction and palatometry.
