Kent, Ohio, March 23, 2015 —The Uumbaji Art Gallery, located at Kent State University’s Oscar Ritchie Hall, is pleased to present “Good” Hair: Celebrating the Diversity and Beauty of Black Hair, a photography exhibit from April 6 to April 30, 2015. Photographs by Moema Furtado. An opening reception and hair demonstration will take place Thursday, April 9 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. with opening remarks by Professor Tameka Ellington, Assistant Professor in The Fashion School. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
This exhibit celebrates the diversity of black hair as adornment and as art. For many people of African descent, hair is about culture, history, fashion, politics, economics, identity, self-worth, and, of course, race. In North America, hair is second only to skin color as a racial signifier. This exhibit acknowledges the struggle that black women and men face in a world that often times negates their life experiences and self-worth by categorizing beauty as one-dimensional and based on white ideals.
