Study Abroad/Away

Studying abroad is a valuable, life changing experience. The Department of Africana Studies offers several study abroad and study away opportunities. Students can choose to study away in Washington, D.C. or take a trip as part of a course to several sites in Michigan. 

Students who are interested in international academic opportunities can visit West Africa: Ghana or Senegal.  These programs are designed to allow students to travel and explore the contemporary “ways of life” of modern West African society.  Students, regardless of major, have the opportunity to think critically about both the commonalities and the differences between their lives in the United States and what they are seeing in West Africa.  

Students can participate in short study away opportunities to Michigan or Washington D.C. through the Black Images or Model African Union courses.  Black Images is designed with the goal of Pan-African immersion experience in mind, while in Michigan students will visit three museums: Jim Crow Museum; Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History; Motown Museum.  Our Model African Union course allows students to study past and current issues facing Africa and the African Union.  Students will travel to D.C. to attend a mock meeting of the African Union where global policies and economic, social and political issues facing the African continent will be discussed.  In addition, students will visit Howard University, various African Embassies, and work with students and faculty from 30 American Universities and colleges who also participate in the Model AU.
