Course description: Africa-derived religions such as Santeria are foundational elements in the cultural development of the island of Cuba. This course will examine their histories, systems of belief, ceremonial practices, and pantheons of spirits, as well as their impact on the history, literature, and music of the region. Students will gain insight into religious syncretism and change as well as the lived experience of some of the most vibrant religious traditions through the eyes of their practitioners who have recently started to open up to outsiders after a period of seclusion.
