Phase-One Construction Opens at Center for the Visual Arts

The completed first phase of the new Center for the Visual Arts opened for classes at the start of the fall semester. Ceramics, glass and jewelry/metals/enameling — the so-called “fire arts” — along with printmaking, were the first disciplines to migrate fully to the new building, joining the sculpture program, which held the fort in the former Art Annex during construction. They will be joined in the spring semester by art education, art history, drawing, painting, textiles and the School of Art Galleries.

The CVA made its public debut with two big events in the fall. On Oct. 3, Homecoming Saturday, the Pre-Game Arts Preview open house gave returning alumni and their families a chance to explore the new building, with live demonstrations serving up new art creations (including edible ones!).

Then, on Oct. 10, the building hosted the Art for Art’s Sake auction, at which eager collectors acquired donated works by some of Kent State’s celebrated faculty and alumni artists, including Diana al-Hadid, Gerald Casale and Nikki Couppee. The Center for the Visual Arts will have its official grand opening on May 6, 2016 — mark your calendars now!
