Mahwish Chishty at SPACES Gallery

Mahwish Chishty, Assistant Professor in Foundations, was invited to do a SWAP (SPACES World Artists Program) residency at SPACES Gallery in Cleveland. The artist residency results in a solo exhibition at the gallery from January 26 – March 23, 2018.  Chishty’s project titled “Naming the Dead” is a sound installation with participants who are school-age children.

Children ranging in ages between 3-10 years old are to be recorded saying the names of Pakistani civilians that are the same ages who were killed in the more than 400 drone strikes that have hit the tribal regions of north west Pakistan since 2004.  “Naming the Dead” is a collaborative effort to create connection between US citizens and Pakistani civilians killed in these drone strikes.  She is asking Americans of the same age and gender to say the name of a Pakistani deceased civilian in order to relate and to start a dialogue. Her current list contains 354 names including two females and several children, commonly described as 'collateral damage' by the military.
