Dr. Robin VandeZande, is a professor of art education at Kent State University. Her research focus is design education for PreK-12 grade students. Her articles have been widely cited in the U.S., Turkey, China, Australia, France, Portugal, and Canada. Besides her books, she has 16 referred publications, has been a keynote or featured speaker for 18 national or state events, has presented over 50 juried papers and has been an education committee member for the National Building Museum, Washington, DC, Fallingwater, and a consultant for the Wescott House in Springfield, OH.
Her book, Design Education: Creating Thinkers to Improve the World (2016), is a resource on teaching design to PreK-12 students. Robin is also co-editor of the 4 volume Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference for Design Education Researchers. She chaired the conference that included attendees from 36 countries and 120 institutions, Chicago, 2015. Her third, co-authored, book will be published summer, 2018, entitled Everyday Fashion, Davis publishers.
As Chair of the Design Issues Group (DIG), National Art Education Association (NAEA) she spearheaded the movement to include the teaching of design in art education. Her efforts were instrumental in the inclusion of design in the National Art Education Standards (2014). She was recognized for her efforts as Design Educator of the Year, 2014, by DIG. In 2017, the Ohio Art Education Association honored her as Higher Educator of the Year.
In 2017, Kent State honored her with a Distinguished Teaching award. In 2018, she received the National Distinguished Fellow award for the National Art Education Association, the National Higher Educator of Art Education award, the Western region (19 states and Canada) Higher Educator of Art Education award, and the Kent State President’s Faculty Excellence award.
She was a consultant to lead the South Carolina writing team to develop stand-alone design standards. It was a wonderful experience to work with this progressive group of educators to produce a model for other states. Robin is co-founder/trustee of DESIGN-ED, with the mission to develop support for design education at national/state levels. She worked with the South Carolina Department of Education writing team to create stand-alone design state standards. She has facilitated design thinking workshops, from local to South Carolina to Istanbul, Turkey, schools.
