PROJECT TEXTURAL COLOR: Making Textiles

SPEND ONE OR TWO WEEKS THIS SUMMER ENJOYING A NEW EXPERIENCE IN TEXTILE ART.

Acquire a new craft skill and enhance your sensitivity for color, texture and design! Gain awareness of how to use centuries old weaving and dyeing techniques to satisfy your personal creative goals!

Woven Textiles
WEAVING: Color and Pattern

July 6 - July 10, 2020

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (with a half hour break for lunch)

Have you always wanted to learn to weave?  This is your chance to learn about the loom and create a woven cloth too!

The workshop provides an introduction to the exploration of color through the process of weaving. Participants will take yarns of varied hues and transform them, through weaving, into richly patterned cloth or a wearable accessory.

Instructor:  Sarah McMahon

Felted and dyed textiles
ART TO WEAR: Felted Accessories

July 13 - July 17, 2020

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (with a half hour break for lunch)

This workshop will focus on contemporary wet felt-making techniques to create sumptuous, one of a kind Laminated Felt accessories—also referred to as Nuno felt. Beginning with silk fabrics, fine merino wool and other luxury fibers, students will create a palette of color using a variety of surface design and dye techniques. These materials will then be transformed into highly textured one of a kind statement neckwear - scarves and jewelry!

Instructor: Dena Gershon

Location:  Both workshops will be held at the Kent State University (Kent campus) in our beautiful Textile Art studio in the Center for Visual Arts (CVA).  Our state of the art facility houses over 40 floor looms, including digital dobby and jacquard looms, and a spacious well-equipped dye lab.

Textile activity has always been cross generational!  These workshops are open to all interested individuals including high school students and community members!  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.

Cost of the workshop:  Each workshop costs only $250 for five days of experiential learning!  ….PLUS a $50.00 materials fee ($300 total), to cover the cost of fabric and/or yarn and dyes to complete the required course explorations.  Registration accepted on a first come first served basis.  Please apply by June 15, 2020.

Please Note: If participants are under 16, a parent or guardian will need to accompany them as a paid participant.
