Dr. Paula Wisotzki, art historian, will be speaking for this First Friday Lecture.

David Smith and Public Engagement

By examining Smith’s career at two pivotal moments – the late 1930s and early 1960s – this lecture will explore this innovative American artist's complicated relationship with modernism. His long-standing sympathies with the working class, combined with his radical transformation of sculpture by welding open forms, meant he was set before the public in sometimes contradictory roles as both anonymous worker and heroic individual.
