Biography

Dr. Craik has been teaching at the Ashtabula Campus since 1991.

Ph.D. in English literature from University of Southampton, England, in 1984

B.A. in English language and literature from Reading University, England, in 1977

Teaches English literature, college writing, and creative writing 

Born in Leicester, England, and educated at the universities of Reading and Southampton, Roger Craik worked at the Turkish universities of Bursa and Izmir before coming to the U.S. as a Yale University Beineke Scholar, and settling permanently in Ohio. He has written three books on literature (including an edition of John Donne, with his father, T. W. Craik), a host of academic articles and scholarly notes, and six books of poetry, one of which, Those Years, was translated into Bulgarian and nominated for a Pushcart Prize. His poetry has appeared in journals in the U.S., the UK, Belgium and Romania. In 2008 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Sofia University, Bulgaria, and gave poetry readings in Bulgarian universities. In 2011 and 2012, he was poet-in-residence at the University of Abu Dhabi at Al Ain, in the United Arab Emirates.

During the academic year 2013-14 he is Fulbright Scholar in English at Oradea University, Romania.

Publications:

Published the poems "Monumental” in the New Verse News, April, 2008 and "In the Vondelpark, Amsterdam" in Muse, March, 2008.

His poems "Pencil Sharpener" and "Forty Years On" were published in Fly in the Head, (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria) in February, 2008.

His book manuscript So Far was named as a semifinalist for the Donald Justice Poetry Prize.

His individual poems, "Heron" and "Fluchtlingskinder" placed third and runner-up respectively for the Akron Art Museum’s New Words 2008 Poetry Contest in April 2008 and the Poetica annual contest for poetry with a Jewish theme, in May 2008.

Presented "The Ambiguous Nature of Music in A Clockwork Orange" at the "Ambiguity and Meaning" conference in Cracow, Poland, April 25-26, 2008.

Published a book of poetry, Those Years (van Zeno Press, Cleveland) 2007. Four of his poems, "To Leonard Cohen," "Collected Poems," "Fragment" and "The Poem," have been translated into Romanian in Familia, 11-12, Oreada, Romania, 2007. pp-278-82.
