Earning your Executive MBA is a great way to develop yourself both personally and professionally, but the decision to go back to school is a big one.

At Kent State’s College of Business Administration, we understand that this isn’t a decision you make lightly, which is why we’re giving you all of the information you need to know before pursuing your Executive MBA.

What is an Executive MBA?

An Executive MBA is a Master of Business Administration program designed specifically for corporate executives and managers. These programs usually take place on selected Saturdays or once per month on several consecutive full days (e.g. Thursday, Friday and Saturday), allowing you to pursue your degree while maintaining your full-time job.

This type of degree is designed to give working professionals a general knowledge and understanding of the business world in order to help them advance within their careers. With convenient schedules, an application-based curriculum and an international component, the Executive MBA is the perfect choice for expanding your personal and professional network and experience.

Typical EMBA Program Characteristics

Executive MBA programs will differ from school to school, but here are a few characteristics that can be found in most EMBA programs:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES

Since EMBA programs are designed for the working professional, the classes are usually provided on weekends to help you work around your schedule. Some programs also offer online courses, but this varies depending on the school and program.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRIP

Most Executive MBA programs include a global business experience trip as part of the program. This gives students the opportunity to gain valuable international business knowledge, which is an important differentiator in the ever-expanding, competitive global marketplace.

DEDICATED STUDENTS

Students enrolled in EMBA programs are serious about their education and their careers. Most programs often require students to have a certain number of years of experience in order to enroll, which means everyone is bringing real-life business experience to the table. Your classmates are professionals just like you and share similar goals.

EMPHASIS ON TEAMWORK

Although the curriculum may differ somewhat from school to school, many programs put an emphasis on teamwork exercises. This allows you to work alongside your peers and learn from one another, which can be just as beneficial as the courses themselves.

How an EMBA Compares to a Traditional MBA

Another thing to consider when making the decision to further your education is determining whether you should get your MBA or Executive MBA. It can be confusing trying to find the right fit, so we’ve laid out the four major differences between an EMBA and a traditional MBA:

1. SCHEDULING

One of the biggest differences between an Executive MBA and a traditional MBA is the way the courses are scheduled. Traditional MBA courses are often offered throughout the week, with some courses held in the middle of the day.

Executive MBA programs are designed with the working professional in mind and offer much more flexible schedules. Students often meet all day, once a week or bi-weekly, and some programs even offer online courses.

2. EXPERIENCE

As far as admission requirements for an Executive MBA program, most schools require a minimum of at least five years’ work experience, whereas traditional MBA programs have no experience requirement.

This usually means students in the Executive MBA are have depth of work experience from which to draw upon in a classroom learning environment. In the traditional MBA program, many of the students are recent graduates of an undergraduate program, meaning they have little real-world work experience.

3. CLASSMATES

The experience of your classmates isn’t the only thing that differs between an EMBA and an MBA program. One of the nice things about an Executive MBA program, especially Kent State’s program, is that classes are divided into cohorts so you graduate with the same students with whom you began the program.

In the traditional MBA program, your classmates can differ from year to year. While there is nothing wrong with working with a variety of other students, you do lose the close-knit atmosphere you get with a cohort.

4. ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Another advantage to an Executive MBA program is that many schools often provide additional services for EMBA students, such as registration assistance, meal delivery, textbooks and more.

Traditional MBA students are typically not privy to these additional services and are responsible for their own registration and textbooks.

The Benefits of Earning Your EMBA

Earning an Executive MBA has many personal and professional benefits. These programs allow you to:

ACQUIRE A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LEADERSHIP

Earning your Executive MBA is a great way to expand your leadership skills. You will learn how to manage your employees effectively and efficiently.

GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Even if you already have a degree in business, having a working knowledge of several aspects of it can serve as a competitive advantage. For instance, knowing how to analyze a financial statement will help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your business plan and allow you to make better-informed decisions.

APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN TO YOUR CURRENT POSITION

The great part of earning your Executive MBA is that you can work while you go to school, giving you the opportunity to combine your lessons with real-world applications. Many programs also incorporate case studies and student experiences into the courses.

NETWORK WITH OTHER BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS

While pursuing your EMBA, you will be studying alongside other professionals. Some of your fellow students may be looking to change careers or find new opportunities, so networking within your classes is a great way to tap into resources and make a good impression.

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER AND CREDIBILITY

One of the biggest reasons people decide to earn their EMBA is to advance themselves in their careers, and statistics show that it works. The average salary and bonus for recent EMBA graduates increased by 16.8 percent from the time they started classes until they graduated, according to the Executive MBA Council 2014 Student Exit Benchmarking Survey.

The survey also found that 41 percent of students reported to have received promotions and 53 percent reported to have received new responsibilities throughout their time in the program.

So Who Should Get an EMBA?

The Executive MBA program is unique because you do not need to have a background in business in order to earn this degree. Students in the EMBA program come from a variety of industries with the common goal of gaining a better understanding of business.

A program like this is perfect for you if you:

  • Aspire to unlock new opportunities
  • Have a desire to expand your business knowledge
  • Want to keep up on the changes within the business world
  • Love taking on a challenge
